Job Description

A video editor's job is to take raw footage and turn it into a final product that matches the director's vision. Their responsibilities include:

• Reviewing footage : Analyzing raw footage to determine which shots to use and what to remove
• Assembling footage : Transferring footage to a computer and assembling it into a rough cut
• Editing : Using editing software to manipulate footage, add sound and effects, and create a final cut
• Collaborating : Working with the director, producer, and other team members to understand the production's vision
• Presenting : Presenting the final cut to the director and making revisions as needed
• Delivering : Delivering the final product on time and adhering to style guidelines
• Staying up to date : Keeping up with industry trends and new editing techniques

Video editors may also be responsible for:

• Creating treatments and storyboards
• Developing scripts
• Sourcing and creating graphics, animations, and special effects
• Color correcting the video
• Ensuring continuity between shots
• Creating pacing through cuts

Some skills that are useful for video editors include:

• Proficiency in video editing tools like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro
• A deep understanding of digital trends and editing principles
