Post-crisis, and in particular with the implementation of Basel III, capital has become a scarce resource and the capital management processes have needed to evolve to reflect this. Capital planning, optmisation and performance are now an integral part of Finance Processes, including Financial Resource Planning and stress testing. Effective capital management, planning and forecasting requires successful co-ordination of activities across a wide range of stakeholders against frequently tight timetables, the ability to work collaboratively with other teams within Finance while providing an effective review and challenge, the ability to place the capital plans within a commercial context and identify opportunities for improvement, and clear communication of the outcomes.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of a newly formed analytics team within Group Treasury, Capital Management. The role holder will have the opportunity to add value, support in the creating of capital efficiency, thus providing the business with opportunities for investment or increased shareholder returns.

We are looking for an individual who has worked in a strats/quants function within the finance sector or has experience in modelling and analytics within financial services.

The role holder will work across a number of disciplines within Group Capital Management, and report to the Director, Group ICAAP. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in production of detailed capital plans under ongoing forecasting, Financial Resource Planning and Stress Testing and clearly articulate the results;
  • Work with Group and Regional Capital Management teams to identify efficiency initiatives, investigate feasibility and support in implementation;
  • Model capital efficiency initiatives and scenarios to identify the optimum allocation of capital within business and regulatory constraints;
  • Assist in the review and challenge local capital plans;
  • Assessment and articulations of risks to capital;
  • Working with the wider Capital management team to ensure plans reflect impacts of capital initiatives and regulatory change, and to identify further opportunities;
  • Working with Strategic Planning and Stress Testing to enhance and integrate the planning and stress testing processes, shifting towards more efficient tools and flexible modelling of the Group capital position;
  • Ensuring that the outputs are of a high quality, reflecting accepted regulatory policy and standards.
  • Other initiatives within the Capital Management team, as required. These may focus on capital efficiency, capital performance, Group ICAAP, ad-hoc analysis or be broader in nature.

  • Group RMM approval of Capital Management framework.
  • Delivery against any ad hoc objectives.
Major Challenges
  • The complex and ever-evolving nature of regulatory rules, and the need to understand implications at both local and Group levels, and across Global Businesses;
  • The co-ordination of a wide range of stakeholders to deliver against a tight timetable, with the flexibility to react to changes in the overall plan timing, generally caused by factors beyond the role holders control;
  • The need to work effectively and be influential across geographies, Finance and Risk.
  • The delivery of crisp, clear messages to senior management, notwithstanding the inherently technical nature of the subject matter;
Role Context

The role:
  • Reports directly to the Group Head of ICAAP, and will involve working with a number of areas within Group Capital Management
  • Interfaces with other areas of Global Finance and across HSBC Group
  • Requires strong and positive partnering with Regional Treasury functions, Business Finance and Stress Testing.

Management of Risk

The role holder will be required to:
  • Ensure they are fully aware of their responsibilities as defined in Capital Policy and Procedures and champion within the team
  • Assess and manage regulatory risk in context of the role
  • Assess and manage operational risks in context of the role
Observation of Internal Controls

The role holder is required to meet all internal controls as set out by the Capital Policy and Capital procedures. In particular, the role holder will
  • Adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators
  • Implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term \xe2\x80\x98compliance\xe2\x80\x99 embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply. This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimising relations with regulators
  • Adhere to the bank\xe2\x80\x99s agreed processes/procedures \xe2\x80\x93 achieving a satisfactory Audit report.
Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications

Experience
  • Finance/ treasury/ risk background, with knowledge of accounting, capital requirements and market risk.
  • Highly numerate with strong background in mathematic disciplines.
  • Understanding of banking products and how they relate to capital requirements.
  • Knowledge of software development and ideally some experience in coding
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Experience of presenting to senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with, co-ordinate and influence a wide range of stakeholders. Experience of working with regulators an advantage.
  • Good understanding of, and ability to pro-actively manage, risks
  • Able to deliver to tight deadlines, react quickly when required.
  • Appetite to seek opportunities and work beyond the immediate boundaries of the role.
Qualifications
  • A mathematics discipline will be most advantageous. However significant operational experience (e.g., 8-10+ years) within Treasury/Capital Planning will also be considered.
