The Tanker Driver is responsible for operating a tanker truck to safely transport liquid or bulk materials such as chemicals, oil, gas, or other manufacturing supplies. This role requires adherence to strict safety and regulatory standards, careful vehicle operation, and ensuring the proper handling of materials during loading, transit, and unloading.
Key Responsibilities:
• Safe Transport: Operate a tanker truck to transport liquids, chemicals, gases, or other bulk materials between manufacturing plants, storage facilities, or customers while following all road safety laws and traffic regulations.
• Loading and Unloading: Assist with the proper loading and unloading of tanker contents, ensuring correct procedures are followed to prevent spillage or contamination.
• Vehicle Inspection: Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tanker vehicle to ensure it is in safe working condition. Report any mechanical or safety issues to management.
• Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate logs of hours worked, materials transported, deliveries made, and any incidents or issues. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal transportation regulations, including hazardous material handling if applicable.
• Route Planning: Plan and follow efficient routes to ensure timely deliveries and pickups. Consider weather, traffic, and road conditions to avoid delays and ensure safety.
• Safety Protocols: Follow all company safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), handling hazardous materials safely, and ensuring the proper handling of any spillages or accidents.
• Customer Service: Provide courteous service to customers and clients while delivering materials. Ensure that all orders are delivered in the correct quantities and condition.
• Material Handling: Ensure the proper handling and containment of materials during transit to avoid leaks, spills, or contamination. Operate equipment like pumps or valves to load/unload materials safely.
• Communication: Communicate with dispatch or management for any changes in delivery schedules, delays, or issues during transport. Report any accidents, delays, or damages during transportation.
• Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure that the tanker is regularly cleaned and maintained, and that it meets all safety and environmental standards.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL): A CDL with the appropriate endorsement to drive a tanker vehicle is required.
• Experience: Previous experience driving tanker trucks or heavy vehicles is preferred.
• Knowledge of Safety Protocols: Understanding of safety regulations related to transporting hazardous or non-hazardous materials (e.g., DOT regulations, OSHA guidelines).
• Physical Fitness: Ability to lift, move, and handle equipment and materials as needed.
• Attention to Detail: Ability to carefully check and maintain delivery documentation, vehicle conditions, and safety procedures.
• Customer Service: Good interpersonal skills to interact with customers and provide excellent service.
• Time Management: Ability to plan efficient routes and manage delivery schedules, ensuring timely deliveries.
• Basic Mechanical Knowledge: Ability to perform routine vehicle inspections and minor troubleshooting or maintenance tasks.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to drive long distances, sometimes across varying terrain, and in different weather conditions.
• Capable of lifting heavy objects and handling equipment for loading and unloading materials.
• Ability to remain focused and alert during long hours on the road.
Education and Experience:
• Licensing: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements for tanker vehicles.
• Experience: 2-3 years of experience driving heavy trucks, particularly tankers, in a commercial or manufacturing setting is preferred.
Work Environment:
• Tanker drivers typically work on the road, often in isolated or varying environments.
• They may be required to work in all weather conditions and are sometimes expected to work overtime or on weekends depending on delivery schedules.
• The job can require long hours, with drivers often away from home for extended periods.
