Role Purpose:
To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission


Main accountabilities but not limited to the following:
Support British Council\xe2\x80\x99s global English strategy by:
  • Ensuring teaching meets learner needs and expectations
  • Delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT both online and offline
  • Enhancing the British Council\xe2\x80\x99s reputation as a world authority in ELT
  • Continuing professional development and sharing of best practices
  • Ensuring teaching meets British Council Global Teaching Standards and organisational expectations
  • Ensuring Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is taken into account when planning and delivering lessons and engaging with customers and colleagues
  • Supporting the teaching centre\xe2\x80\x99s activities and British Council plan
  • Ensuring safeguarding and other guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and Policy for the following areas: -

  • Child protection
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Health and safety



Role specific skills
  • Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups considering individual learning styles and modes of learning
  • Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students\xe2\x80\x99 performance throughout their learning, and actively promote learner autonomy and progress
  • Attend staff meetings and otherwise contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students\xe2\x80\x99 needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team
  • Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards and uphold professional responsibilities and values. Ensure British Council\xe2\x80\x99s values are reflected in their work
  • Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council\xe2\x80\x99s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
  • Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service through dissemination of information and communications with students
  • Ensure guidelines and policies are applied and upheld in relation to Safeguarding, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, SEND, Health and safety
  • Ensure customers are aware of British Council\xe2\x80\x99s cultural relations role and help develop opportunity for students to gain some understanding of the UK and its values and to participate in inter-cultural interactions either in class or as out of class activity



Role specific knowledge and experience:
2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience, in an internationally recognised English language teaching institute.
Experience in teaching relevant age groups
  • Early Years aged 2 to 5 (100+hours) 4
  • Primary aged 6 to 10 (100+ hours)
  • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (100+ hours)
  • Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (100+ hours) (or willingness to acquire experience under supervision as soon as possible)
  • Adults General English 18+ (800+ hours

Engage and motivate learners
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment
  • Plan and deliver coherent lessons
  • Make use of assessment and feedback
  • Manage teaching and learning resources
