Job Overview:
The Switchyard & Substation Technician is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of switchyards, substations, and electrical equipment within the power distribution network. The role requires a deep understanding of electrical systems, high-voltage equipment, safety protocols, and technical skills to ensure efficient and safe operation.
Key Responsibilities:
• Operations & Monitoring:
• Monitor and operate electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, and switches in the switchyard and substation.
• Ensure the efficient flow of electrical power by managing the electrical grid and substation components.
• Perform routine inspections to ensure all equipment is functioning properly and address any abnormalities.
• Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
• Conduct regular preventive maintenance on substation equipment including transformers, busbars, breakers, and other high-voltage electrical components.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical faults and failures within the substation or switchyard.
• Respond quickly to emergencies, outages, and faults to minimize downtime.
• Safety Compliance:
• Follow safety standards and regulatory guidelines (e.g., OSHA, IEEE) in the operation and maintenance of high-voltage equipment.
• Wear appropriate safety gear and use safe practices while working with electrical systems, including lockout/tagout procedures.
• Assist in safety audits, and actively contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
• Equipment Testing and Calibration:
• Test and calibrate electrical equipment like relays, breakers, and transformers to ensure they meet operational standards.
• Perform insulation resistance testing and other diagnostic tests to detect potential issues before they cause failure.
• Documentation & Reporting:
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance, inspection, and repair activities.
• Prepare reports on equipment status, incident reports, and any required compliance documentation.
• Assist in creating and maintaining operation manuals for equipment and procedures.
• Collaboration:
• Work closely with engineers, operators, and other technicians to coordinate activities.
• Participate in team meetings to discuss any system upgrades or maintenance schedules.
• System Upgrades & Improvements:
• Assist in the installation and commissioning of new equipment and substation upgrades.
• Participate in projects aimed at improving efficiency, reliability, and performance of the power system.
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
• Diploma in Electrical
• At least 6-7years of experience in electrical power systems, particularly in the maintenance or operation of switchyards and substations.
Skills and Competencies:
• Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting electrical equipment, including high-voltage systems.
• Knowledge of power systems, substation layouts, electrical theory, and safety regulations.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in high-pressure situations.
• Familiarity with electrical diagrams and blueprints.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Work Environment:
• The role requires working in outdoor or indoor substations and switchyards, where exposure to high-voltage systems is common.
• The job involves physical tasks such as lifting heavy equipment and working in various weather conditions.
• Overtime and on-call work may be required during emergencies or scheduled maintenance windows.

Pay: ?35,000.00 - ?40,000.00 per month
