Job Description

Carry out the procedures of admission and discharge and transfer-out/transfer-in of the patients admitted in MICU.

Makes beds for the patients and helps the students or housekeeping employees to make beds by supplying linen.

Maintains personal hygiene and comforts of the patients.

Close observation and monitoring the vital signs of the patients assigned to her/him.

Operates machines like ventilators, patient monitor with multiple modules, central Oxygen/vacuum/Air units, Dialysis Machine, ECG Machine, Syringe Infusion Pump, Defibrillator etc carefully.

Monitoring vital parameters (mechanically and manually) CVP monitoring arterial monitoring, ICP monitoring, perform endotracheal/tracheostomy & oral suctioning, monitor hourly urinary output, GCS scoring.

Assist the intensivist for endotracheal intubation, central Venous Catheter insertion, intercostal drainage, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion hemodialysis catheter insertion, lumbar puncture, arterial line insertion, PA catheter insertion, Paracenthesis and for any other minor procedures done in ICU.

Perform and assist in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Monitoring the patients on artificial ventilator.

• Provide pre and post-operative nursing care to patients who have undergone minor and major surgeries including renal transplantation.
• Maintain clean and safe environment for the patient.
• Attend nutritional needs of the patient and feed the patient (Oral/Nasogastric feed).

a. Co-ordinate patient care with other team members.

b. Attend doctor's rounds and carryout the orders/instructions.

c. Indent drug from the pharmacy (online).

d. Diet ordering (online).

• Perform various technical tasks related to nursing care.

e. Administration of medication, oral, injections, infusions and transfusions etc.

f. Assisting doctors in various medical and surgical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures by preparing patients and getting ready with required things.

g. Collecting and sending specimens for laboratory diagnostic procedures.

h. Perform gastric lavage giving enema etc.

i. Prepare patients for operations and sent to operation theatre with all necessary documents and medications.

j. Takes care of eyes, ears, back, bowel, bladder perineum, breast etc as needed.

k. Continuous observation and monitoring of patients condition and take suitable action accordingly as per consultants.

l. Provide expert and skill full bed side nursing to patients.

m. Attends last offices in case of a patient dying and arrange to preserve dead body in mortuary or hand over with respect to concerned family members/relatives/authorities.

ICU Management:

• Helps ICU in-charge to carry out her/his work or act as shift-in-charge during their absence Proper Maintenance of NABH Quality Indicators pertaining to ICU.
• Maintains general cleanliness of the ICU and the sanitary annexure.
• Supervises the work of housekeeping employees in health care waste management.
• Does drug ordering, diet ordering (on -line lab ordering etc.).
• Maintains procedure entry and other documentation.
• Supervise nursing care and other tasks performed by trainee staff and students.
• Maintain store room, trays and prepare instruments and articles for autoclaving and sterilization.
• Take over the patient, unit, equipment's instruments supplies drugs etc from the previous shift nurse and hand over the same accordingly to the coming shift nurse.
• Maintain all the records pertaining to the unit.
• Procedure entry.
• Maintains care sheet, investigation report.
• Maintain ICU sheet and other special charts etc.
• Takes special care of Medico Legal Case sheets and records.
• Writes day and night orders and maintain ICU statistics
