A speech therapist, also known as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), assesses and treats speech and language disorders. They also help people with swallowing difficulties.
Responsibilities
Evaluate speech, language, and swallowing skills
Create treatment plans for patients
Teach patients how to make sounds, improve their voice, and maintain fluency
Help patients improve their vocabulary and sentence structure
Work with patients to strengthen the muscles used for swallowing
Counsel patients and their families
Educate patients and their families on how to cope with communication disorders
Collaborate with other professionals to improve communication abilities
Treatment approaches
Perception exercises to differentiate between sounds and syllables
Exercises to improve breathing, swallowing, and voice
Helping patients with aphasia find ways to communicate
Education and skills
You need bachelor's degree in speech and language pathology. You should also have good interpersonal skills and be able to manage multiple demands. RCI registration is mandatory.
