Job Summary:
The Special Educator will be responsible for developing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with diverse learning needs. The role involves working closely with students, parents, teachers, and other professionals to ensure each student receives the support and resources they need to succeed academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities:
Assessment and Diagnosis:
Conduct comprehensive evaluations to assess students' educational and developmental needs.
Interpret assessment results and identify specific learning disabilities or challenges.
Develop detailed reports and documentation based on assessment findings.
Individualized Education Programs (IEPs):
Create and implement IEPs tailored to each student's unique needs and goals.
Monitor and track student progress, adjusting IEPs as necessary to ensure continued growth and development.
Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to develop and review IEPs.
Instruction and Support:
Provide direct instruction to students in individual and small group settings.
Utilize a variety of teaching methods and materials to accommodate different learning styles.
Implement behavior management strategies to support positive student behavior.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with general education teachers to modify curriculum and teaching strategies to meet the needs of special education students.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about their child's progress and any concerns.
Collaborate with other specialists, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and school psychologists, to provide comprehensive support.
Professional Development:
Stay informed about the latest research and best practices in special education.
Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities.
Attend and contribute to school meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
Advocacy and Support:
Advocate for the needs and rights of students with disabilities within the school and the broader community.
Provide guidance and support to parents and families navigating special education services.
Promote an inclusive and accepting school environment.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.
State certification in Special Education.
Proven experience working with students with special needs.
Strong knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude towards working with students with diverse needs.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with specific disabilities such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and emotional/behavioral disorders.
Proficiency in assistive technology and adaptive materials.
Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
