A site engineer manages construction projects, ensuring that work is completed on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards. They are responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
• Technical advice Provide technical advice and guidance to subcontractors, craftspeople, and operatives
• Site management Oversee the day-to-day management of the construction site, including supervising the workforce and subcontractors
• Quality assurance Ensure that materials and work meet specifications, and implement quality control processes
• Communication Liaise with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and other professionals to keep them informed of progress
• Compliance Ensure that the project complies with local construction regulations and safety and sustainability standards
• Project planning Develop project plans, analyze survey reports and maps, and calculate material quantities
• Cost management Prepare estimates for time and material costs, and assist with cost tracking and financial reporting
• Reporting Prepare site reports and presentations, and compile reports for stakeholders
Site engineers typically have a background in civil, structural, geotechnical, building services, mechanical, or electrical engineering. They may work for companies that take on large-scale building, engineering, and infrastructure projects. In India, a site engineer may also be referred to as a site supervisor, project engineer, construction engineer, building engineer, structural engineer, or field engineer.
