The Night Duty Server Room Operator is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and ensuring the smooth functioning of servers and IT infrastructure during night shifts. The role involves real-time system monitoring, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring uptime and security of critical IT systems.
Key ResponsibilitiesMonitoring & Maintenance
Continuously monitor server health, network status, and system performance.
Perform routine checks on hardware, software, and cooling systems.
Ensure data backups and scheduled maintenance tasks are completed successfully.
Issue Identification & Troubleshooting
Respond promptly to system alerts, errors, or hardware failures.
Troubleshoot network, server, and application-level issues during the night shift.
Escalate critical issues to senior IT staff when necessary.
Security & Compliance
Maintain physical and digital security of the server room.
Ensure only authorized personnel access the server room.
Follow company IT policies and industry best practices for data security.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain logs of system performance, issues encountered, and resolution steps.
Prepare shift reports for IT management on system status and any incidents.
Document troubleshooting steps and update knowledge base for future reference.
Other Responsibilities
Assist in system updates, patch management, and performance tuning.
Ensure power backups (UPS/Generator) are functional during the shift.
Perform any additional duties as assigned by the IT Manager.
Skills & QualificationsTechnical Skills
Strong understanding of server operating systems (Windows/Linux).
Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, Firewalls).
Familiarity with monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix, PRTG, etc.).
Experience with data backup and disaster recovery procedures.
Basic knowledge of hardware components (RAID, power supply, cooling systems).
Soft Skills
Ability to work independently and handle critical situations.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills for reporting incidents.
Attention to detail and proactive approach in preventing issues.
Experience & Educational Requirements
Education
: Diploma/Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field.
Experience
: 1-3 years in IT infrastructure, server monitoring, or data center operations preferred.
Certifications (Preferred)
: CCNA, RHCE, MCSA, or any relevant IT certifications.
Work Environment
Night shift work in a server room/data center environment.
Requires prolonged periods of monitoring screens and responding to alerts.
May require lifting IT equipment (within reasonable limits).
