  • The topic of ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) is one of the top priorities for the HSBC Group. Sustainability is a key area of focus as we set a new climate ambition and refined our purpose, ambition and values to reflect our strategy.
  • There has been an unprecedented increase of ESG regulations and disclosure requirements. The Senior Manager - ESG reporting will be responsible delivering external disclosures and ensuring the highest standards of governance are met.
Environment Social Governance (ESG):
  • Leading on the delivery of the external ESG disclosures for subsidiaries in certain geographies which are increasing significantly. This involves working closely with executive owners and senior leaders across numerous business and function areas of the Group.
  • Overseeing the production process for the ESG disclosures for subsidiaries in certain geographies, ensuring appropriate tone, meeting disclosure requirements and stakeholder needs.
  • Liaising with Financial Controllers and their teams in subsidiary entities to ensure Group approach and disclosures are aligned. Review of the disclosures before publication for key subsidiaries to ensure consistency of messaging.
  • Staying close to complex and vast regulatory and policy developments in ESG disclosure by working closely with Regulatory and Accounting Policy teams to ensure HBSC is pro-active in meeting new requirements and has integrated into its businesses. (e.g. European Non-Financial Reporting Directive, Hong Kong Exchange listing rules, etc.).
  • Continually benchmark HBSC\xe2\x80\x99s ESG disclosures to peers, including meeting with external contacts at these companies and representing HSBC publically in a credible manner
  • Working closely with other members of the team on the verification/assurance process for external ESG reporting, including engagement with relevant 2LOD teams and internal audit as required.
Principal responsibilities
  • Improve the external and internal perception of ESG at HSBC
  • Driving the engagement with senior leadership and their teams across the businesses and functions to deliver on new and existing disclosure commitments.
  • Leading the production of external ESG disclosures for subsidiaries in certain geographies, ensuring consistency of messaging across other parts of AR&A
  • Managing an expanding team, allocating roles and responsibilities as per the skillset and designing and executing on the training to bring new team members up to speed and fully operational within a brand-new area of ESG.
  • High quality ESG disclosures
  • Internal ESG dashboard at Group and regional level
  • Positive feedback from key stakeholders.
Major Challenges:
  • There is a significant amount of senior stakeholder management which requires the role holder to build strong relationships across the bank and carefully manage potential differing views or issue resolution.
  • New ESG reporting requirements may be unclear and may require the role-holder to exercise judgement on how these should be met.
  • ESG external reporting is an evolving space and growing priority for the bank and its stakeholders. The role-holder will need to ensure improvements in ESG disclosures and keep up with the external environment while ensuring consistency with HSBC\xe2\x80\x99s external messaging.
Role Context:
  • Role is based in Global Finance
  • The Senior Manager ESG Reporting role sits in the ESG Head of Finance team, a global team responsible for leading internal and external financial reporting, controls oversight, forecasting, stress testing and other key finance functions.
  • The role has visibility within Group Sustainability, SEP, Global Businesses, Global Finance, Office of GCEO and a variety of senior internal / external stakeholders.
  • The jobholder will oversee a period of significant ESG related developments.
  • Plays a high profile and influencing leadership role across a global team of finance professionals during a period of significant change in a challenging operating environment.
Role Dimensions:
  • Group\xe2\x80\x99s total assets on 31 Dec 2023 are US$3 trillion. Group\xe2\x80\x99s non-financial targets include Climate commitments and D&I targets.
  • The Senior Manager - ESG reporting will be supported by a dedicated team for ESG Finance professionals.
  • This role will manage the process by which HSBC communicates its ESG position to market participants and other stakeholders. It has a significant impact on how the Group is perceived externally.
  • This role provides an opportunity to design, communicate internally and externally the Group\xe2\x80\x99s key ESG performance metrics and industry colour in a structured, disciplined manner.
Requirements
  • Qualified Accountant, with a detailed knowledge of the HSBC\xe2\x80\x99s strategy, operations, structure and businesses including experience of traditional financial reporting processes.
  • Deep understanding of Group\xe2\x80\x99s ESG / Sustainability agenda and overall business strategy, able to project manage and suggest designs for new datasets/reporting in ESG/Sustainability.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ESG and Sustainable Finance developments. E.g. Transition to the low carbon economy
  • Ability to deal with senior internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner, concise oral and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills with the ability to work without direct authority at senior levels across a global organisation.
  • Strong ability to anticipate, identify and mitigate risks and apply appropriate controls.
  • Commercially minded and ability to both make decisions in a timely manner and to delegate to others.
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance.
