  • Improve the external and internal perception of ESG at HSBC
  • Taking responsibility for MI/Planning and AOP responsibilities for ESG Finance.
  • On the governance side, play a key role in the governance of the Groups ESG commitments and the related metrics.
  • Support the Businesses and the Group Sustainability team in the developments of metrics for our net zero targets.
  • Provide input in the design of the ESG financial/performance metrics which drive the growth of this business.
  • Ongoing monitoring and reporting of all relevant ESG metrics (including social).
  • Work towards a strategic solution for all of our ESG data requirements, which includes system development / automation, including Finance led reporting requirements.
  • Provide MI/financials for ESG Finance.
  • Support in developing metrics as well as monitoring of net zero targets.
  • Monitoring and governance over the developed ESG metrics.
  • New ESG reporting requirements integrated with existing processes and upcoming systems developments.
Major Challenges:
  • Significant focus on the topic of ESG from external stakeholders (e.g. investors) and an significant increase in ESG related requirements (e.g. disclosures).
  • Increased legal risk in relation to ESG commitments and disclosures.
  • Dealing with senior stakeholders across the Businesses and Functions, ensuring that the ESG agenda is understood, and key external commitments are successfully delivered.
  • Ensuring improvements in ESG disclosures, keeping up with the external environment while ensuring consistency with HSBCs external messaging - deep understanding the banking industry and regulatory environment
  • Forming relationships with colleagues from throughout the Group business and functions
Role Context:
  • Role is based in Global Finance
  • The Senior Manager - ESG Finance will be responsible for supporting the Head of ESG Finance in the delivering external disclosures and ensuring the highest standards of governance are met.
  • The role holder will be expected to drive a step-change in internal and external ESG reporting at HSBC and design a business-as-usual process to meet these requirements in the long-term.
  • The role has visibility within Group Sustainability, SEP, Global Businesses, Global Finance, Office of GCEO and a variety of senior internal / external stakeholders.
  • The jobholder will oversee a period of significant ESG related developments.
  • Plays a high profile and influencing leadership role across a global team of finance professionals during a period of significant change in a challenging operating environment.
Role Dimensions:
  • Groups total assets on 31 Dec 2023 are US$3 trillion. Groups non-financial targets include Climate commitments and D&I targets.
  • The Senior Manager - ESG Finance will be supported by a dedicated team for ESG Finance professionals.
  • This role will manage the process by which HSBC communicates its ESG position to market participants and other stakeholders. It has a significant impact on how the Group is perceived externally.
  • This role provides an opportunity to design, communicate internally and externally the Groups key ESG performance metrics and industry colour in a structured, disciplined manner.
Requirements
  • Qualified Accountant, with a detailed knowledge of the HSBCs strategy, operations, structure and businesses including experience of traditional financial reporting processes.
  • Deep understanding of Groups ESG / Sustainability agenda and overall business strategy, able to project manage and suggest designs for new datasets/reporting in ESG/Sustainability.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ESG and Sustainable Finance developments. E.g. Transition to the low carbon economy
  • Ability to deal with senior internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner, concise oral and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills with the ability to work without direct authority at senior levels across a global organisation.
  • Ability to represent the Group views credibly in external foram involving other major international banks and regulators.
  • Strong ability to anticipate, identify and mitigate risks and apply appropriate controls.
  • Commercially minded and ability to both make decisions in a timely manner and to delegate to others.
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance
