The Government of the Republic of Nauru is seeking to recruit an experienced lawyer, in the position as a senior legislative drafter (SLD) within the Department of Justice and Border Control. The SLD is responsible for providing legislative drafting services upon the instructions of the Director - Legislative Drafting (DLD). Such services include conducting legal research, drafting Bills, Regulations, Rules, Parliamentary Ministerial speeches for Bills.
Working under the supervision of the DLD, the successful applicant will be part of a team of legal professionals, fostering and growing external partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Justice Secretariat, Solicitor General, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Office of the Public Legal Defender, and all other divisions of the Department, the Cabinet and other Government departments.
Key Competencies:
• Past or current experience in legislative drafting;
• Knowledge and experience in the application of the principles and practice of legislative drafting;
• Experience in public consultation for the purposes of collating information relevant for drafting legislation;
• Knowledge of and the ability to interpret legislation, policies, procedures and other related documents;
• Understanding of drafting international treaties, conventions and protocols into domestic legislation;
• Research, analytical and reasoning skills including comparative analysis of similar legislation in other jurisdictions;
• Ability to communicate and provide legal advice commendably both orally and in writing;
• Ability to carry out public presentations of legislation;
• Ability to work as part of a team; and
• Computer skills and experienced with the development of or assisting in maintaining online access to the Laws of Nauru.
Required Qualification, Skills & Experience:
• Undergraduate Degree in Law (LLB) and any specialised training in legislative drafting.
• Demonstrated skills and at least having 5 years' experience in drafting without any specialised training in legislative drafting will also be considered.
• Persons with drafting skills from any common law jurisdiction are encouraged to apply as there are foreign nationals from many jurisdictions working in Nauru.
• Admission to practice as a legal practitioner in a common law jurisdiction.
