This is what #LifeAtBNY is all about.:Were seeking a future team member for the role of Senior Director, Senior Managing Counsel -Head of Legal, India to join our Legal team in India. This role will be based in Pune, India HYBRID.In this role, youll make an impact in the following ways:

  • Act as senior lawyer responsible for legal coverage over BNYs presence in India, which comprises an Operations entity, a Technology entity, a Pershing entity and a Representative Office across locations in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai.
  • Working closely with broader Legal colleagues and external law firms, handling a portfolio of basic to complex legal issues, providing legal advice and counsel to internal local and international management. This will include, but not be limited to, the following areas of legal practice: Employment Law; Enforcement & Investigations; Governance and Corporate Secretary; Regulation, Supervision & Corporate Affairs; Commercial; Litigation; Legal Technology; and Real Estate.
  • Viewed as a trusted internal partner to the India sites, including in interactions with senior colleagues based in India and internationally, site management and local legal entity board members.
  • Oversee relationships with key Indian legal vendors, including local law firms.
  • Proactively communicate with global Legal colleagues on a timely and relevant basis, ensuring that subject matter experts are engaged in issues and relevant regional Legal management are kept informed as matters evolve.
To be successful in this role, were seeking the following:
  • Experienced India-qualified legal advisor, with a minimum of 12-15 years post qualification experience with a reputed law firm in India and/or with a multinational corporation in the financial services industry.
  • Native or bilingual fluency in English (written and oral) is required for this role additional local language skills would be beneficial.
  • Broad range of substantive legal skills developed over an extended period including but not limited to:
o Strong understanding of and hands-on experience in "Indian Labor and Employment Law" matters;
o Knowledge and experience of company law and/or governance and banking regulation in Indian federal and state jurisdictions, including Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu;
o Experience in internal investigations and managing litigation and regulatory investigations; and
o Experience in negotiation and management of commercial contracts with vendors.
  • Proven leadership qualities with extensive experience of direct team management.
  • Strong communicator, with gravitas to maintain credibility with different senior stakeholders in India and internationally. Highly collaborative.
  • Adept problem-solving skills. Ability to work through issues autonomously to develop/identify practical, commercial solutions. Experience in balancing commercial flexibility and risk management.
  • Extensive experience in managing relationships with outside counsel, with focus on delivery of commercially focused, solution oriented legal advice as cost effectively as possible.
  • Intellectually curious, adaptable, and interested in learning new skills.
  • Willing to embrace and engage in developing a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Familiarity with current legal, regulatory and market trends and initiatives impacting India.
  • Well networked with senior legal colleagues at global institutions.
