About The Role

As a Senior Data Engineer at Alta, you will have the opportunity to leverage your extensive data management skills in a modern and rapidly evolving development environment, while also being deeply integrated into a broader team that's on the leading edge of financial innovation.

We are looking for passionate Data Engineers with strong problem-solving skills and prior experience building modern data infrastructure. You should possess end-to-end data engineering knowledge (dimension modeling to ETL to data warehousing) and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. As a Data Engineer, you would be involved in the agile development cycle and take ownership of various data tools from design to deployment.

As a senior data engineer, both hands-on development and technical leadership are big parts of the job. You'll be a key technical stakeholder in our feature planning process, helping to map complex business requirements to technical solutions and offering your ideas and opinions. You'll have extensive opportunities to mentor more junior members of the team, and will contribute significantly to ensuring we continue to hire the best engineering talent to the team.

We're a supportive, social, and entrepreneurial team of former investment bankers, technologists, and strategists. Clear, honest communication is key to everything we do.

The sorts of things you'll be doing:

• Collaborate with Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Data Analysts, and Software Engineers to build and manage data products and the Alta Data Warehouse.
• Design, develop, and launch efficient and reliable data pipelines.
• Solve issues in existing data pipelines and build their successors.
• Create modular pipelines to construct features and modeling tables.
• Perform root cause analysis on incidents and implement appropriate actions.
• Create, document, and maintain highly readable code.
• Obtain and ingest raw data at scale using scripts, web scraping, APIs, and SQL queries.
• Work with senior team members to develop and improve our data warehouse architecture, data pipelines, infrastructure, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Use tools like •DBT, Terraform, GCP, Airflow, BigQuery•, and Redshift daily.
• Work on technical teams as a key contributor to our code base, serving as a technical advisor and thought leader.
• Participate in code reviews within and outside of your team to continuously improve code quality.
• Set and monitor progress toward your development goals in conjunction with your manager and mentors.
• Own your deliverables, working with business stakeholders and team peers from planning through to release.
• Stay updated with the latest tooling and industry best practices, ensuring we discuss, evaluate, and implement the best solutions.
• Share your ideas, opinions, and feedback on our tech stack, tooling, and culture to ensure continuous improvement.

About You

• Master's/Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of data engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on Python experience.
• A strong sense of what it takes to build scalable, secure, and cloud-native architecture.
• Experience with source control systems like GitHub or Bitbucket, and how they work within a team.
• Knowledge of APIs and analytical databases.
• Hands-on experience in batch/real-time data integration and processing.
• Strong code review habits, leading by example with proactive and constructive comments and conversations among peers.
• Excellent knowledge of data modeling in both relational and non-relational databases.
