Organization Overview

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Our 39,000 employees worldwide work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism.

The Medicines Innovation Hub (MIH) strives to discover, develop, and deliver creative medicines to patients through the development and commercialization of insulins, small molecules, monoclonal antibodies, novel therapeutic proteins, peptides, oligonucleotide therapies and gene therapy systems. This organization is a multidisciplinary group that works collaboratively with therapeutic business units and manufacturing to deliver the incredibly exciting Lilly clinical portfolio to patients around the world.

The Lilly Capability Centre India (LCCI) located in Bengaluru India is a strategic investment made by Lilly to attract top talent from the vibrant academic and professional environment in India and deploy them to develop and enable critical capabilities for Lilly. The LCCI group in India houses a MIH team that works closely with the MIH team in Indianapolis in enabling the delivery of Lilly's portfolio.

Responsibilities

This position is in computational chemistry. In this role you will have the responsibility for applying computational modeling & simulation methods and tools to model properties and phenomena in large complex systems to help solve a wide range of problems related to drug and device development; permeability, stability, mass transport, aggregation, material compatibility, and miscibility, among others. This position will require a fundamental understanding of the molecular components that are used in the design and manufacture of drug products, including both small molecules and biologics, and the materials that make up packaging and medical devices.

Candidates must demonstrate a history of strong technical depth, a broad base of modeling skills, scientific leadership and a willingness to promote a collaborative, team-based approach to problem solving. The candidate will have a combination of deep fundamental knowledge in the areas related to chemistry/materials and strong mathematical modeling skills. The candidate will also have the proven ability to apply these skills to problems related to the chemical properties of biological molecules, polymers, and other soft matter materials. Work may be conducted independently or more frequently, as part of a product development team consisting of other engineers, scientists, and technicians.

Individually, you will be involved with the following activities:

• Identify and solve problems where key insights from computational modeling & simulation can have direct impact on the drug development portfolio.
• Communicate solutions from computational modeling & simulation in a meaningful and effective to customers and stakeholders.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

You will contribute to the development of pharmaceutical products with some subset of the following responsibilities:

• Work with scientists and engineers across the MIH and partner organizations to design drug products that can be delivered effectively and safely through both oral and parenteral routes of delivery.
• Work with scientists and engineers to design efficient processes for the manufacture of drug substances and drug products.
• Contribute to an increase in basic understanding of the science of delivery of biologics, such as interfacial interactions, aggregation, and transport.
• Enhance Lilly's professional image and competitive advantage through patents, presentations, publications, and professional activities.
• Interact with third parties for external modeling or relevant experimental data when needed.
• Stays current on relevant new technologies, capabilities, and regulatory expectations, guidelines, and requirements; effectively share this knowledge with others; and identify opportunities for implementation.
• Ensures individual and departmental compliance with the laws, regulations, guidelines, procedures, and practices governing drug research and development, including the departmental and corporate standard operating, good manufacturing, and safety procedures.
• Ensure that people and their environment are safe and that company policies concerning safety are followed.

Basic Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry, Computational Biophysics, or Computational Materials Chemistry.
• Experience with 0-6 years in a relevant field that utilized Computational Chemistry or Computational Biophysics.
• Proficiency with commercial software packages for molecular dynamics simulations and applying to complex systems
• Expert knowledge of open-source software for molecular dynamics simulations such as Gromacs and LAMMPS and related programs used to build systems for use with these platforms
• Proficient in Python or other programming language

Additional Skills/Preferences

• Experience building and applying coarse-grained modeling like Martini or Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) on large systems of biologics or materials
• Experience with commercial quantum chemistry packages
• Enhanced sampling techniques like Umbrella Sampling, Metadynamics, and Replica-Exchange
• Working experience doing force field optimization
• Experience implementing molecular simulations in a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment

Additional Information

• Limited Travel may be required to Lilly sites globally.
