Purpose
The Sustainable Mobility team at CEEW is looking for a Data Collation Interns (2) to join our dynamic team, to carry out data collection and digitization activities on one (or more) national highways emanating from Delhi - but limited in expanse to the Extended National Capital Region. The team's focus is aimed at proliferation of sustainable mobility for various vehicle segments - from 2 and 3-wheelers to cars, buses, and medium and heavy-duty trucks. This position involves collecting and storing data in a manner conducive to the team's research, and in supporting research-related activities upon request.
The Intern will work on development and refinement of diverse datasets, primarily on traversable elements of highway-level (and some allied) rural and urban road networks and electric vehicle charging or conventional vehicle refuelling establishments which will aid the ongoing research activities within the team.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
Data Collection
•Highway and Allied Network Information •
• Use StreetComplete and/ or OSMAnd to collect network element-related information on a handheld device, such as number of lanes, maximum allowed speed, width of carriageway, width of median, presence of shoulder(s), type of node, and more for National Highway 44 beginning at Delhi (Okhla) and continuing up to Agra Bypass. The exact details of the route to the be traversed are subject to discussion.
• Clean, validate, export, and store the collected network information, complementing the data with additional sources of secondary and primary information, such as "points of interest in the vicinity of a road stretch", or "nearest settlement order", among others.
• Some other roads (such as state highways, major district roads, or arterial roads) that are not explicitly part of the NH44 may also require for their data to be collected.
• Share GPS trajectories of the paths traversed along the surveyed links.
• Identify and mark vehicle refuelling/ recharging stations present along the surveyed stretches.
•Refuelling/ Recharging Stations' Information •
• Of the marked refuelling and/ or recharging establishments, survey key establishments to get observation data on vehicular in-/out-flows, dwell times, land use information, queue-processing modality, throughput capacities, modal splits of incoming vehicles, among others.
• Clean, validate, export, and store the collected establishment information in any tabular or georeferenced database.
•Project Management Unit (PMU) Research, Technical and Engagement Support •
• Additional tasks may be discussed with the intern and added to the above, if deemed necessary.
Deliverable(s)
• Data tables and georeferenced maps (on projected coordinate systems) of the all collected information.
• All scripts and virtual environments (with language and library version numbers/ Docker sets/ YAML or .env or .txt) used for data collection, scraping, preprocessing, and allied tasks.
Selection Criteria
Qualification
• Ongoing or completed bachelor's degree in physical planning, civil engineering, transportation engineering/ planning, or allied disciplines.
Key skills
• Solid foundational understanding of common mobility-related surveys and data collection techniques, such as spot speed surveys, speed and delay surveys, turning movement counts, classified volume counts, in-situ annotations, and more.
• Sound understanding of the functionalities of StreetComplete/ OSMAnd/ MAPS.ME or other similar applications.
• Knowledge in developing and managing first-order databases.
• Understanding of Python, PostGRES, SQL, STATA, SPSS, or R will be considered a plus.
• Proficient in QGIS or ArcGIS and skilled in visualizing complex datasets.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to work on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Ability to think on your feet and adapt to matters during data collection exercises.
