Purpose


CEEW seeks to hire a research intern for its Powering Livelihoods programme within the Sustainable Livelihoods team. As part of the Sustainable Livelihoods team at The Council, the individual would be involved in the cross-cutting themes of energy access and rural livelihoods and would advance policy through evidence.


Powering Livelihoods, a USD 3 million joint initiative by CEEW and Villgro, aims to transform the rural economy with the penetration of clean energy-powered livelihood solutions. It supports enterprises deploying clean-energy-based livelihood solutions for undertaking large-scale commercial deployments and leverages this enterprise growth for ecosystem acceleration through - evidence generation and dissemination, unlocking sectoral partnerships (with financiers, investors, policymakers, etc.) and providing market advisory and policy support.


With the vision that decentralised renewable energy (DRE) will be an integral part of all rural productive use applications within the next ten years, one of the major focus areas of the programme is to inform the sector with data-driven research on the impact of DRE solutions and the effectiveness of strategies that help their scale up.


The successful applicant will assist the team members in undertaking quantitative and qualitative research, including literature review data analysis, and would support the advancement of the research and policy engagement for decentralised renewable energy.


In addition to the duties and responsibilities below, the individual should be prepared to take on additional responsibilities as and when necessary.


Job Duties and Accountabilities


Research and Analysi


• Assist in assessing the socio-economic impact of DRE livelihood solutions -
+ Support in developing methodologies/frameworks for the multi-dimensional impact assessment of DRE livelihood solutions along with its relevant documentation.
+ Assist the team with designing the survey questionnaire, sampling strategy, enumerator training, conducting qualitative and quantitative interviews, and analysing data in accordance with planned research activities.
+ Assist in conducting stakeholder consultations for data gathering and verification.
• Support the team in drafting a roadmap to mainstream women in the clean energy sector within the "Powering Livelihoods" programme, outlining targets for enterprises and dedicated strategies.
• Assist the team in conducting virtual interviews with existing programme users and compile success stories showcasing socio-economic impacts.

Programme Assistance


• Support effective design and subsequent publication of research outputs through coordination with the outreach team and other concerned stakeholders.
• Manage partnerships with key collaborators involved in the impact assessment study, including data collection agencies, enterprises, channel partners, financiers, and other ecosystem stakeholders.
• Assist with executing events (consultations, workshops and roundtables) initiated by the Powering Livelihoods Team, including emailing attendees and following up, preparing event documentation, and coordinating with Outreach and other concerned teams.
• Assist the senior researchers in strategic outreach and dissemination of the research outputs by engaging with a broader network of financiers, policymakers, industry, and other stakeholders.
• As needed, support and accompany team members to internal and external meetings, prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with any relevant follow-up.

Writing and documentation

• Assist in writing and proofreading research reports/papers, RFPs, briefs, write-ups and issue notes, which could be circulated among financiers, state and central government officials and other sector stakeholders.
• Generate other knowledge products such as presentations, memos, and blogs regularly for different audiences.
• Support the team in developing concept notes and following up for engagements with enterprises, data collection agencies, government stakeholders, channel partners, and financiers.

Selection criteria


Qualification

• Strong academic credentials, preferably a Bachelor's/Master's degree with a specialisation in economics, statistics, development studies, livelihoods, agriculture, public policy or related fields
• Knowledge of the rural development sector.
• Desirable - Experience on themes such as livelihoods, decentralised renewable energy, monitoring and evaluation and stakeholder engagement.

Key skills

• Sharp analytical skills (including logical reasoning, critical thinking, information gathering, analysing and visualising).
• Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with relevant stakeholders.
• Proficiency in using Google Workspace tools such as Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
• Strong work management and prioritisation skills.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Striving for rigour in research and quality in work output.
• Ability to effectively work in a team while being able to drive research if and when needed independently.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment.
• Willingness to travel to field sites for high-quality data collection and stakeholder engagement.
