• Patient Monitoring : Monitor patients during procedures, treatments, and recovery phases, especially if they are receiving injections, IV fluids, or post-operative care.
• Medication Administration : Administer prescribed medications, including oral, injectable, and topical treatments, and observe for any reactions or side effects.
• Wound Care : Dress wounds, change bandages, and ensure proper infection control measures are followed.
• Patient Education : Educate patients about their conditions, prescribed treatments, lifestyle changes, and preventative measures.
2. Clinical Support
• Assisting Physicians and Healthcare Providers : Help doctors and other healthcare professionals during exams, procedures, or diagnostic tests. This may include preparing equipment, providing tools, and assisting with patient positioning.
• Sample Collection : Collect specimens for laboratory tests (blood, urine, swabs) and properly handle and label them for analysis.
• Health Screenings : Perform screenings for conditions like blood glucose, cholesterol, vision, hearing, or blood pressure and report results to physicians.
• Preparing and Administering Vaccines : Administer vaccines and keep up-to-date records of vaccinations.
3. Administrative Duties
• Patient Documentation : Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential medical records, including updating patient charts and documenting patient interactions, treatments, and outcomes.
• Appointment Scheduling : Assist in managing the clinic's appointment schedule, including confirming patient visits, rescheduling, or referring them to specialists.
• Inventory Management : Ensure medical supplies, medications, and equipment are stocked and in good condition. Alert management when supplies are low or nearing expiry.
• Billing and Insurance : Assist with basic billing tasks, including ensuring proper documentation for insurance claims, coding, and patient billing.
4. Patient Safety and Infection Control
• Sterilization and Disinfection : Ensure that all instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and that the clinic environment follows appropriate infection control practices.
• Infection Control : Follow clinic guidelines for infection prevention and control, including hand hygiene protocols and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ensuring Patient Comfort : Ensure patients feel comfortable, safe, and supported during their visit, addressing any concerns or anxieties they may have.
5. Collaboration and Communication
• Team Collaboration : Work closely with other nurses, physicians, and clinic staff to ensure cohesive and coordinated patient care.
• Patient and Family Communication : Maintain open communication with patients and their families regarding treatment plans, follow-up appointments, and instructions for at-home care.
• Referral Coordination : Coordinate with other healthcare providers or specialists for referrals when necessary and communicate essential patient information.
6. Health Promotion and Preventive Care
• Health Education : Provide patients with information about wellness, preventive health practices, and lifestyle modifications, such as diet, exercise, and stress management.
• Chronic Disease Management : Assist patients with managing chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, including education on self-care, medication adherence, and monitoring.
7. Emergency Preparedness
• Basic Life Support (BLS) : Be prepared to perform CPR and other emergency interventions if a patient experiences a medical emergency.
• First Aid : Provide first aid to patients who sustain minor injuries or medical emergencies while at the clinic.
• Emergency Protocols : Follow clinic protocols in the event of an emergency, including evacuations or responding to incidents like allergic reactions or falls.
8. Continuous Learning and Professional Development
• Education and Training : Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on medical practices, nursing techniques, and regulatory requirements.
• Licensing Requirements : Maintain active professional licensure and certifications as required by local healthcare regulations.
• Quality Improvement : Participate in clinic efforts to improve patient care, reduce errors, and implement best practices.
9. Clinical Documentation and Reporting
• Recording Patient Interactions : Ensure all patient interactions, assessments, and interventions are thoroughly documented in the clinic's electronic health record (EHR) system.
• Reporting Changes : Communicate any significant changes in a patient's condition to the supervising physician or healthcare team promptly.
