The Executive Director, Medical Writing provides global strategic direction, leadership, and management to the medical writing team to ensure the delivery of projects and programs within cost, time, and quality requirements.


The leader is accountable for achieving overall financial, operational, and strategic Medical Writing goals, and works globally to develop and deliver new and existing business. The leader develops the departmental organizational structure, and recruits, trains and motivates colleagues to ensure performance excellence.


The Executive Director, Medical Writing leads on the development and implementation of changes within the department within processes, technologies and operations to globally align Medical Writing with the strategic direction and goals of the organization. The leader oversees development of commercial content related to Medical Writing and acts as primary client point of contact for Executive level interaction. They drive thought leadership within the Medical Writing field and ensures appropriate presence at related industry events.

A day in the Life
---------------------

• Provides leadership, strategic oversight, and direction to the Medical Writing department, developing and communicating the strategic vision that is commensurate with corporate and organizational goals.
• Develops and leads development and management of the departmental budget. Promotes and advocates for the business needs of the Medical Writing group. Builds relationships with other PPD departments and seeks opportunities to collaborate with other functions for mutual benefit.
• Identifies market trends, anticipates the need for change and actively supports a changing environment. Provides creative, novel and strategically-aligned global ideas for taking the organization forward.
• Identifies and develops business opportunities involving new Medical Writing projects and opportunities for the company. Develops and leads collaborative working relationships with business development and senior management in securing new business by making presentations to clients, conducting contract negotiations, developing and reviewing proposal texts and budgets, in collaboration with Proposal & Contracts Development and other functional delivery personnel.
• Provides accountability and leadership in handling complex client management issues, program management issues and managing client partnerships. Assumes primary responsibility for the visibility and reputation of the Medical Writing group within PPD.
• Remains ahead of the curve on new technology, systems, and AI opportunities within Medical Writing and leads the implementation and operational effectiveness of new technology driven improvements.
• Establishes policies appropriate for the function. Interprets and recommends modifications to policies and procedures. Develops, evaluates and is responsible for budgets, departmental resources and performance.

Education and Experience
----------------------------

• Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 15+ years) or equivalent and relevant combination of education, training, and experience.
• 7+ years of management responsibility
• Advanced leadership skills


In some cases an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

• Highly developed leadership skills with the ability to manage people including performance, training, mentoring, directing and motivating colleagues.
• Extensive business knowledge with comprehensive understanding of the organization and Medical Writing functional area.
• Excellent project management skills, including the ability to organize, plan and manage projects, create and modify budgets, develop timelines, allocate resources, and forecast departmental workload.
• Ability to identify, lead and drive strategic planning on behalf of the organization and department, including effective communication, logic and influence.
• Innovation and leadership in developing new ideas related to Medical Writing and cross-functional delivery, including process improvements, data and technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
• Demonstrated ability to build teams, maintain collaborative relationships, initiate cross-functional mentoring; anticipate resistance; influence without authority and provide a executive-level presence when necessary.
• Ability to effectively communicate, negotiate, engage and support potential clients, corporate leaders and across functional areas.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skills; self- motivated and adaptable.
