Job descriptionJob Title: School Parent Counselor:
Parent-School Communication: Facilitate communication between parents and school staff. This could involve resolving doubts, arranging meetings, or helping parents understand the school's curriculum and policies.
Parental Engagement: Plan and implement strategies to enhance parent involvement in the school. This might include organizing Parent-Teacher Meetings, creating volunteer opportunities, and hosting workshops for parents to help them better support their children's education.
Resource Linking: Connect families with resources within and outside of the school that can help their children succeed. These resources might include tutoring programs, health services, or extracurricular activities.
Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and concerns of parents within the school system. Work with school administrators to address parents' concerns and help parents understand their rights within the school system.
Policy Implementation: Implement and follow local, state, and central guidelines related to family engagement in schools. Stay updated with laws and regulations impacting school and parent relations.
Crisis Management: Assist in managing family crises that might impact a student's performance at school, working closely with other school staff such as teachers, school psychologists, and social workers.
Cultural Sensitivity: Understand and respect the cultural diversity of the school community, and foster cross-cultural understanding among parents, teachers, and students.
Skills and Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
Prior experience working with families or in an educational setting is desirable.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of the school system and policies.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and empathy.
Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse populations.
Basic computer skills for maintaining records and communication.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment: This job generally involves working in a school environment and standard office conditions. It might also involve some travel for home visits or meetings at different locations.
