Job Summary:
The OT Technician supports the surgical team by preparing and maintaining the operating room, sterilizing instruments, handling equipment, and ensuring the patient's safety during surgical procedures. They are also responsible for postoperative care in the OT and assistance with anesthesia procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
• Preparation of Operating Room:
• Set up the OT with required surgical instruments, sterilized equipment, and supplies.
• Ensure cleanliness and sterilization of the OT before and after procedures.
• Arrange OT instruments, machines, and tools as per the requirements of the surgical team.
• Assistance during Surgery:
• Assist surgeons and anesthetists during operations.
• Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons during procedures.
• Handle surgical instruments and ensure proper sterilization post-use.
• Monitor the condition of the patient during surgery.
• Sterilization and Infection Control:
• Maintain a sterile environment in the operating theatre.
• Sterilize and prepare surgical instruments using autoclaves or other sterilization methods.
• Implement infection control practices to minimize risks to the patient.
• Patient Care:
• Assist in patient positioning before surgery.
• Help in moving and transferring patients to and from the OT.
• Monitor patient's vital signs in collaboration with the anesthetist.
• Post-Operative Procedures:
• Clean the operating room after surgery.
• Ensure safe disposal of waste, including biological and sharp wastes.
• Restock and replace supplies as needed for upcoming surgeries.
• Equipment Handling:
• Operate and maintain specialized OT equipment, including monitoring devices, sterilizers, and surgical instruments.
• Ensure that all equipment is in proper working order before and during surgeries.
• Coordination and Documentation:
• Communicate with nurses, doctors, and other OT staff to ensure smooth operation.
• Maintain accurate records related to the surgical instruments used and other supplies.
Skills and Competencies:
• Knowledge of operating theatre procedures and sterile techniques.
• Ability to handle surgical instruments with care.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Attention to detail and excellent organizational abilities.
• Ability to stay calm and focused under pressure.
Qualifications:
• Education: Diploma/Certificate in OT Technology or an equivalent qualification.
• Experience: 1-3 years of experience working as an OT Technician is preferred but not always mandatory.
• Certifications: Certification in OT Technician course and Basic Life Support (BLS) may be required.
Work Environment:
• This role requires working in a hospital or surgical center, primarily in the operating theatre.
• OT Technicians often work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on surgery schedules.
