Position Summary:
The OT Technician plays a key role in supporting the surgical team during operations by preparing and maintaining the operating room, sterilizing instruments, and assisting surgeons and nurses during surgical procedures. The OT Technician ensures that all surgical instruments and equipment are sterile, functioning properly, and available at the required time. This role requires attention to detail, technical skills, and the ability to work in high-pressure environments to ensure patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Preparation of the Operating Room:
• Prepare the operating room by ensuring it is clean, sterile, and equipped with all necessary instruments, tools, and supplies before surgery.
• Set up and arrange surgical instruments, drapes, and equipment according to the surgical procedure and surgeon's preferences.
• Verify the availability of required surgical instruments and equipment, checking for functionality and sterility.
• Assist in preparing the patient by positioning them correctly on the operating table and preparing the surgical site.
• Surgical Assistance:
• Assist the surgical team (surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses) during the operation by passing instruments, sponges, and other materials as needed.
• Maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery and handle instruments in a safe, hygienic manner.
• Monitor and manage sterile supplies and instruments to ensure the surgical team has everything they need throughout the procedure.
• Assist in retracting tissues, performing suction, and other tasks as directed by the surgeon or surgical team.
• Sterilization and Infection Control:
• Ensure proper sterilization techniques are followed for surgical instruments and equipment before, during, and after each procedure.
• Monitor infection control practices, ensuring the surgical area and instruments remain sterile and safe.
• Assist with the cleaning and sterilizing of surgical instruments and equipment post-operation.
• Post-Operative Duties:
• Help with the cleaning and reorganization of the operating room after the surgery.
• Ensure all surgical tools and materials are accounted for and that the operating room is prepared for the next procedure.
• Properly dispose of waste materials (sharps, biological waste) in compliance with safety and health protocols.
• Inventory and Equipment Management:
• Maintain an inventory of surgical supplies, ensuring that they are regularly checked and replenished.
• Keep track of surgical instruments and other equipment, ensuring they are in good working order.
• Notify supervisors or appropriate personnel if any equipment requires repair or replacement.
• Safety and Compliance:
• Follow all hospital policies, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines related to infection control, sterilization, and surgical procedures.
• Assist in maintaining a safe environment for both patients and the surgical team by adhering to proper safety practices.
• Documentation and Reporting:
• Accurately document any equipment used, supplies consumed, and other relevant information during surgical procedures.
• Assist with maintaining accurate records of surgical procedures and patient care activities, as required.
Qualifications:
• Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
• Formal training or certification in Operating Room Technology or Surgical Technology from an accredited institution is preferred.
• Licensure/Certification:
• Certification as an Operating Room Technician (CORT) or Surgical Technologist (CST) is preferred, depending on regional requirements.
• CPR and First Aid certification may be required.
• Experience:
• Previous experience as an OT Technician or Surgical Technologist in an operating room setting is preferred.
• New graduates or individuals with relevant clinical training are also encouraged to apply.
• Skills & Competencies:
• Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization techniques, and operating room protocols.
• Familiarity with medical terminology and surgical procedures.
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
• Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time-management skills.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare staff.
• Ability to maintain composure and focus during emergency or complex procedures.
Working Conditions:
• Work is typically conducted in an operating room environment, requiring long periods of standing and assisting during surgeries.
• The role may involve exposure to infectious materials, hazardous substances, and high levels of stress.
• Shifts may include nights, weekends, or on-call hours, depending on the needs of the facility.
