Job Description

A microbiologist studies microscopic organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and algae, to understand how they grow, live, and interact with their environment. Their responsibilities vary depending on their work setting, but some common duties include:

• Research and development Microbiologists may collect samples, perform experiments, and help develop new products. For example, they may work on genetically engineered crops, biofuels, or new medicines.
• Healthcare Microbiologists may test patient samples to identify infections, monitor outbreaks, and develop new medical treatments.
• Food safety Microbiologists may inspect food and drink for contamination, and assess the impact of microbes on food quality.
• Environmental Microbiologists may use microorganisms to control pollution, and assess the impact of microbes on soils and crops.
• Laboratory work Microbiologists may use a variety of laboratory instruments and computer software to analyze results and conduct experiments. They may also grow microbe cultures, and develop and manage quality control processes.

Microbiologists often work in teams with other scientists and technicians. They should have excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. They should also be familiar with a range of technical skills, such as analytical techniques, and be able to solve problems through investigation.
