Job Description

A Medical Sales Representative (MSR) role is to promote and sell medical products and pharmaceutical drugs to healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Product Knowledge and Training :
• MSRs are expected to have deep knowledge of the products they sell, whether it's medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or diagnostic equipment. This includes understanding how the product works, its benefits, potential side effects and how it compares to competing products.
• Continuous training on new products and industry trends is essential to stay competitive and informed.
• Sales and Promotion :
• The MSR is responsible for meeting sales targets by promoting medical products to healthcare professionals. This often involves making cold calls, scheduling meetings, and conducting product presentations.
• They may present product samples, provide literature, or conduct in-service demonstrations to show how the product works.
• Building Relationships :
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and other healthcare providers is a vital part of the job. Establishing trust helps ensure repeat business and customer loyalty.
• Networking within the healthcare community is also crucial to understand their needs and identify potential sales opportunities.
• Market Research :
• MSRs need to be aware of market trends and competitor products to strategize effectively. This includes monitoring sales data, feedback from healthcare professionals, and identifying gaps in the market for new product opportunities.
• Understanding regulatory requirements, including FDA approvals, is also important for ensuring compliance with legal standards.
• Customer Support :
• Offering ongoing customer support after a sale is critical. MSRs may assist healthcare providers with product usage, troubleshooting, or training.
• They may also address any concerns or issues that arise regarding the products they sell.
• Reporting and Administrative Tasks :
• Keeping accurate records of sales activities, customer interactions, and sales performance is an essential part of the role. This often involves using CRM (Customer Relationship Management) tools to track interactions and monitor progress against sales targets.
• MSRs must submit regular reports on sales, feedback from healthcare professionals, and market trends to management.
• Compliance with Regulations :
• Medical sales representatives must adhere to strict healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) in the U.S. or similar regulations in other countries. They must ensure that all product information shared with healthcare professionals is accurate and in compliance with industry standards.
• This also includes understanding ethical guidelines and regulatory rules for marketing healthcare products.
• Product Launches and Events :
• MSRs are often involved in launching new products, which can include organizing events, attending trade shows, and giving presentations.
• They may also participate in training sessions for healthcare professionals and key opinion leaders.

Skills and Qualities Required:

• Communication Skills : Ability to clearly present product information and listen to doctors needs.
• Sales Skills : Persuasion and negotiation abilities to close deals and reach sales targets.

Typical Education and Background:
