Your opportunity
We're looking for a Principal Engineer to head our industry-leading Application Performance Monitoring (APM) team.

This job is a formative career opportunity to drive the innovation and growth of our APM product. New Relic is widely recognized as the best APM product in the market and you'll be responsible for building the next generation of APM tools. You'll be working closely with the entire New Relic platform to drive system performance, scalability of systems, and insights for customers.

This role is ideal for a UI architect with experience building scalable, extensible experiences and a passion for solving hard engineering problems, who enjoys working across teams to realize their vision. You will find this role to have a direct impact on hundreds of thousands of engineers across the world.
What you'll do
• You will drive the architecture for APM at New Relic in partnership with Engineering leaders throughout the organization. Focus areas include:
• Evolve the platform for APM in areas like application profiling, AI integration, component architecture, and system design.
• Design and develop platform architecture to enable teams with reusability, extensibility, and automation.
• Be hands-on where vital.
• Coordinate the progress of engineering teams to ensure consistency with design while providing technical mentorship to the engineers.
• Collaborate on product strategy & roadmap to solve customer problems, and drive greater user adoption, and product differentiation.

This role requires
• Keep up to date with technologies - AWS/Azure/GCP, serverless, Docker, Kubernetes among others
• Excellent collaboration abilities, with the capacity to work effectively with cross-functional teams, present ideas, and communicate technical concepts clearly
• Passion for exploring new technologies and finding creative solutions to complex problems, keeping up with industry trends and advancements in observability and related domains
• Strong understanding of scalable distributed systems and microservices architecture, with the ability to design and implement solutions that meet performance and scalability requirements
• Proven ability to lead and mentor a team of software engineers, guiding them towards technical excellence, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality code
• Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale software systems, utilizing modern programming languages and frameworks
• 8+ years of experience working as a software engineer working in Java and/or Go with a strong computer science background and an aptitude for learning new languages quickly
• 4+ years of experience as a technical lead for a team of at least 5 engineers
• Bachelor's degree, software development, engineering, or a related technical field


Bonus points if you have
• Experience with OpenTelemetry
• Experience with AI integration
• Experience with design systems that integrate 3rd party code and components
