1. Setting Up the Equipment
• Positioning : The surveyor is responsible for correctly positioning the Total Station at a known or established point, ensuring it is level and calibrated to ensure accuracy.
• Orientation : Ensuring the instrument is oriented properly for measuring angles and distances. This may involve sighting a known point or using reference markers.
• Checking Calibration : Ensuring the Total Station is properly calibrated before use, which may involve checking for any drift in measurements.
2. Data Collection
• Measuring Angles and Distances : Using the Total Station to measure horizontal and vertical angles, as well as distances from the instrument to various survey points. The operator must ensure accurate reading of the data.
• Control Points : Identifying and measuring control points, benchmarks, or other known locations to ensure the survey's integrity.
• Field Notes : Documenting measurements, observations, and any anomalies that may affect the data quality. This includes weather conditions, instrument settings, and any potential obstructions.
3. Data Management
• Recording Data : Ensuring all measurements are correctly recorded in the Total Station's data logger, and that backup copies of the data are stored in case of equipment failure.
• Error Checking : Continuously checking for measurement discrepancies or errors in the data, such as outlier readings or poor visibility conditions that could affect accuracy.
• Downloading Data : Transferring data from the Total Station to a computer or data processing system for analysis and further use.
4. Analysis and Quality Control
• Data Processing : After the survey is complete, the data needs to be processed and analyzed using appropriate software to create accurate maps, plans, or 3D models. This step may include calculating coordinates, distances, and elevations.
• Accuracy Check : Ensuring that the final data meets the required precision standards. If any errors or inconsistencies are found, it may be necessary to re-measure certain points.
