• Microbiological Testing & Analysis :
• Prepare clinical samples, such as blood, urine, sputum, wound swabs, and other specimens, for microbiological examination.
• Conduct microbiological tests such as cultures, Gram stains, microscopy, biochemical testing, PCR, and sensitivity testing.
• Isolate and identify pathogenic microorganisms using appropriate microbiological methods, including culture media, staining techniques, and molecular methods.
• Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (e.g., disk diffusion, MIC) to determine the resistance profile of isolated pathogens.
• Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance :
• Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, including microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, and automated analyzers.
• Ensure that laboratory equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly; report malfunctions or needed repairs to the supervisor.
• Ensure the cleanliness and sterilization of all microbiological tools, glassware, and equipment, maintaining infection control standards.
• Quality Control & Documentation :
• Maintain accurate, detailed records of all tests performed, including specimen details, test results, and any anomalies observed.
• Follow established quality control procedures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of microbiological testing results.
• Ensure that microbiology test results are appropriately recorded in the laboratory information system (LIS) and reported to the clinical team promptly.
• Maintain proper documentation for inventory, reagents, and consumables to ensure timely ordering and availability.
• Biosafety & Infection Control :
• Follow all laboratory biosafety protocols to ensure safe handling and disposal of biological materials, particularly infectious or hazardous specimens.
• Adhere to infection control policies and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while handling specimens and working in the laboratory.
• Disinfect laboratory surfaces, equipment, and instruments according to safety standards.
• Collaboration with Medical and Laboratory Teams :
• Work closely with physicians, microbiologists, and other laboratory staff to interpret test results and provide relevant information for patient diagnosis and treatment.
• Report unusual findings, significant results, or discrepancies to the microbiology supervisor or medical staff immediately.
• Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case discussions, and the investigation of unusual microbiological cases.
• Sterility and Culture Media Preparation :
• Prepare microbiological culture media, reagents, and solutions used in diagnostic testing and microbial isolation.
• Sterilize culture media and equipment using autoclaves and ensure that media and supplies are appropriately stored and handled.
• Maintain and ensure the quality control of all reagents and culture media, ensuring they meet the required standards.
• Training and Continuing Education :
• Stay updated with the latest developments in microbiology and laboratory techniques through training, workshops, and literature.
• Participate in internal training programs to maintain technical expertise in microbiological testing methods.
• Assist in the training and orientation of new lab technicians or students.
• Inventory Management :
• Assist in the management of laboratory inventory, including consumables, reagents, and supplies, ensuring stock levels are maintained.
• Ensure proper storage and labeling of microbiological reagents and chemicals, in accordance with safety guidelines.
• Reporting and Result Interpretation :
• Accurately interpret test results and communicate findings to the appropriate healthcare professionals.
• Ensure that all microbiology test reports are clear, concise, and consistent with clinical protocols.
• Provide detailed information about microorganism characteristics (e.g., antibiotic resistance patterns) to assist clinicians in treatment decisions.
