Job Overview:
The Kitchen Helper assists kitchen staff in food preparation, cleaning, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment. This entry-level position is crucial in supporting chefs, cooks, and other kitchen staff to ensure smooth kitchen operations. The Kitchen Helper is responsible for handling basic kitchen tasks such as washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, food prep assistance, and stocking kitchen supplies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Food Preparation Assistance:
• Help in washing, peeling, chopping, and cutting vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients.
• Assist in measuring ingredients and mixing basic recipes under the guidance of kitchen staff.
• Prepare garnishes and side dishes for service.
• Cleaning and Sanitizing:
• Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, surfaces, counters, and walls.
• Wash dishes, utensils, pots, and pans using industrial dishwashers or manually.
• Sanitize kitchen equipment and tools to meet hygiene standards.
• Regularly empty trash bins and dispose of waste in accordance with the facility's waste management protocols.
• Dishwashing and Laundry:
• Operate dishwashing machines and clean by hand when necessary.
• Ensure dishes and utensils are clean, free of grease, and properly stored after washing.
• Storage and Organization:
• Help in organizing dry and refrigerated food storage areas, ensuring that items are stored safely.
• Maintain food inventory by checking stock levels and assisting in food rotation (FIFO - First In, First Out).
• Label and store items according to kitchen standards.
• Assisting Cooks and Chefs:
• Provide support to chefs and kitchen staff with general food preparation tasks.
• Assist with plating food, garnishing dishes, and other tasks as directed.
• Transport ingredients, dishes, or items around the kitchen as needed.
• Health and Safety:
• Follow food safety regulations and kitchen hygiene standards.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment by using proper sanitation and handling techniques.
• Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor.
• Waste Management:
• Handle food waste disposal in compliance with environmental and safety guidelines.
• Assist in separating recyclable materials and composting food scraps when applicable.
• General Kitchen Support:
• Assist in unloading deliveries and putting away food orders.
• Help set up and break down the kitchen before and after shifts.
Skills & Qualifications:
• Basic Culinary Knowledge: Familiarity with basic cooking techniques and kitchen terminology is a plus, but not required.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, stand for long periods, and lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
• Attention to Detail: Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and food safety.
• Time Management: Ability to complete tasks efficiently and meet deadlines, especially during peak hours.
• Team Player: Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
• Flexibility: Ability to work in various kitchen areas and take on tasks as assigned.
Experience & Education Requirements:
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
• Experience: Previous kitchen or restaurant experience is an asset but not mandatory. On-the-job training will be provided.
• Certifications: A food safety or handling certificate (e.g., ServSafe) is an advantage but not required.
Working Conditions:
• The role involves working in a fast-paced kitchen environment with exposure to heat, humidity, and potentially hazardous equipment.
• Must be comfortable with long shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• The position may involve standing, bending, lifting, and repetitive movements for extended periods.
