Job Summary

Medical Laboratory Technicians, are trained medical professionals who collect medical samples and perform tests, analyze body fluids, examine blood samples, and discuss test results with physicians for proper diagnosis and treatment.





Medical Laboratory Technician Job Duties:


• Organize work by matching computer orders with specimen labelling; sorting specimens; checking labelling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
• Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
• Identifies and communicates abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel, the pathologist, the patient physician, or nurse; reporting mandated information to the health department or other designated officials.
• Blood Storage - ensures the patient of receiving compatible blood/blood components by completing blood typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, and antibody identification procedures. Assures future retrieval of patient transfusion information by preparing patient packets and maintaining blood storage database.
• Clinical Biochemistry - assist to provide a broad array of routine and specialized clinical laboratory testing services on blood, urine, and other body fluids. Encompasses a wide range of laboratory tests which includes Blood, Urine.
• Clinical Pathology - assist in analysis of bodily fluids, tissues, and cells to identify abnormalities and provide insights into the underlying causes of various medical conditions. Encompasses a wide range of laboratory tests which includes Urine, Stool.
• Cytology - assist for determining a diagnosis, use small amounts of bodily tissue or fluid in order to examine certain types of cells. Encompasses a wide range of laboratory tests which includes Urine and Body Fluids.
• Hematology - assist to provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology, and coagulation equipment. Encompasses a wide range of laboratory tests which includes Blood and Body Fluids.
• Histopathology - assist in diagnosis and study of diseases of the tissues, and involves examining tissues and/or cells under a microscope.
• Microbiology - assist to provide physician with information for treatment of patient infection by performing technical procedures for the identification or susceptibility of bacteria, parasites, fungi, and mycobacteria.
• Phlebotomy - assist in the process of making a puncture in a vein, usually in the arm, with a cannula for the purpose of drawing blood. The procedure itself is known as a venipuncture, which is also used for intravenous therapy.
• Serology - assist to measure the presence and concentration of antibodies in the blood. It is used to diagnose and monitor several infectious diseases.
• Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
• Maintains patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential.
• Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and NABH standards.
• Enhances laboratory services and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
