THIS POSITION IS BASED IN NAURU

The government of the Republic of Nauru is seeking to recruit an experienced Judges Associate for the Department of Judiciary. The role of the Associate is to support the Judges in the Supreme Court in their management and conduct of proceedings before the Court dealing with Refugee Cases. The Associate will be based in Nauru for Court sittings as directed by the Registrar. The Associate will work closely with the Judges, the Registry, and other key stakeholders, to support the management of the chambers and case files of the Judges of the Court.

KEY COMPETENCIES

Major aspects of the Associate's role will be;

• In conjunction with the Registry, assume day-to-day running of chambers including responding to enquiries at the direction of the Judges and the Registrar.
• Conduct legal research relevant to proceedings before the Court, as directed by the Judges and the Registrar.
• Assist the Judges to manage their case files, by preparing and managing matters listed for hearing.
• Assist the Judges to draft judgments, including by developing suitable templates.
• Ensure the Court's case management systems are up to date.
• Assist the Judges to prepare orders.
• Maintain court-related relationships with various external stakeholders.
• Contribute to organisational meetings for better work practices.
• In conjunction with the Registry, and as directed by the Registrar, maintain robust and accessible records of all aspects of proceedings before the Court.
• Other duties as required, and as directed by the Judges and the Registrar.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES;

• Strong communication (oral and written) and liaison skills and the ability to communicate effectively in an intercultural context.
• The ability to conduct legal research, particularly in common law jurisdictions, and to engage in new and developing areas of law.
• The ability to work independently with minimum supervision and be responsible for legal as well as administrative tasks.
• Capacity to maintain professional standards at all times dealing with a range of stakeholders, and to work with highly sensitive and confidential material.
• Excellent organisational and file management skills, including maintaining records.
• The ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities in a dynamic environment with limited facilities.
• Demonstrated diligence and the ability to work as a member of a small team.
• Ability to take instructions.
• A high standard of ethical behaviour.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor of Laws or equivalent
• Current or former employment as an Associate to Judges in common law jurisdiction is preferred but not necessary.
• Relevant academic and practical experience relating to the conduct of legal proceedings and legal research with emphasis on refugee law cases
• Academic or professional experience in the field of administrative law and international protection law and exposure to the refugee law

REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, rent-free accommodation with other benefits. Recreation leave of 20 days annually and free on island medical will be provided.
