The ICU Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality care to critically ill patients within the ICU, monitoring their health, administering medications, and coordinating with the multidisciplinary team. They play a vital role in maintaining a safe, supportive environment and responding to emergency situations as required.
Key Responsibilities:
• Patient Care and Monitoring:
Provide continuous and comprehensive patient care, including monitoring vital signs, maintaining accurate records, and assessing changes in patient conditions.
Administer medications, fluids, and other prescribed treatments while ensuring precise dosage and timely delivery.
Ensure the comfort and safety of patients, assisting with mobility, hygiene, and daily care needs.
• Medical Equipment and Treatment:
Operate and maintain ICU-specific equipment, such as ventilators, monitors, and infusion pumps.
Perform regular checks on equipment and troubleshoot or report any malfunctions.
Ensure all equipment and supplies are prepared and available for procedures and treatments.
• Emergency Response and Critical Interventions:
Act swiftly and competently during emergencies, such as code blue situations or sudden patient deterioration.
Assist physicians with emergency procedures and provide CPR or other life-saving measures when required.
• Documentation and Record-Keeping:
Accurately document patient conditions, treatments, and observations in the electronic or paper-based medical records.
Ensure compliance with hospital protocols for recording medication administration, vital signs, and patient interactions.
• Patient and Family Communication:
Provide clear, empathetic communication with patients and their families, explaining treatment plans and addressing concerns.
Educate family members on patient care needs and post-ICU care, as appropriate.
• Infection Control and Safety:
Follow strict infection control guidelines to maintain a sterile environment, including proper hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and sanitization of patient areas.
Participate in infection control audits and ensure compliance with hospital policies.
• Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Team:
Work closely with doctors, respiratory therapists, and other ICU staff to provide holistic and coordinated care.
Participate in ICU rounds, updating the team on patient progress and changes in condition.
• Professional Development and Compliance:
Engage in ongoing training and professional development to stay updated on critical care protocols.
Adhere to all hospital policies, ethical standards, and confidentiality agreements.
