Job Description


We are seeking a qualified person to lead our underwriting function for the Property Treaty underwriting in India and the subcontinent. Important aspects of the role are responsibilities for product strategy and underwriting quality. The leadership task comprises managerial responsibility for the team handling the portfolio of Property for APA3.4. The position reports directly to the Chief Executive India and is based in Mumbai. The function forms part of the APA1 Executive committee; APA1 Management committee and APA Underwriting committee.Your Role:

  • Lines of Businesses: Property (Excluding Agro, Casualty, Cyber, Marine, Aviation and other specialty lines)
  • Underwriting quality: actively steer the underwriting portfolio for APA1.2; ensure underwriting excellence within the underwriting community; support, steer and cooperate with the underwriting teams in other locations and drive the dialogue to other international offices.
  • Product strategy: develop, further enhance and successfully implement LoB strategies for the APA1.2 underwriting business; ensure the alignment of the LoB strategies and the market/client strategies; proactively support client management by exploring new business fields and helping to grow the portfolio beyond the existing book; contribute to the annual planning process with sound UW input.
  • Client facing / Marketing: drive Munich Re's perception in the markets as an innovative company that leads opinion on both new and known issues and pro-actively offers clients targeted and bespoke solutions (market visits, presentations, client workshops); conduct negotiations with clients and clearly explain very complex technical concepts to a client in an inspiring manner in close cooperation with client management.
  • CU interface: Set up a strong interface with CU and ensure implementation of best UW practices, standards, guidelines. Contribute actively to Topic papers and offer time and support on various CU/market initiatives towards enhancing UW quality for the BU and the firm.
  • Firm building: support the divisional and house wide quality assurance in Property Treaty.
  • Leadership / Management: develop the existing underwriting team in India based on expert know how, competency development and business needs; ensure smooth know-how-transfer in the underwriting community; Promote an open feedback culture and a challenging, supportive and rewarding work environment for team members to expand professionally.
Your Profile:
Education & Experience
  • Relevant professional qualification (i.e. university degree if possible in mathematics, economics or in a scientific related discipline) or insurance qualifications with relevant experience
  • Experience: comprehensive, multi-year and far stretching underwriting experience, ideally incl. non-traditional business fields; track record in development of innovative products, transactions and services; (MR) international working experience
Competencies:
  • Expertise: solid know how of Munich Re steering concepts, processes and IT tools for underwriting, business administration, business planning and reserving; high degree of analytical and problem solving capabilities and a very structured and pragmatic approach, willingness to share knowledge within the team and also on a Munich Re wide basis
  • Market knowledge: experience within the respective markets or equivalent comprehensive professional experience in emerging markets as well as in emerging markets
  • Leadership: proven strong leadership and management skills in a relevant leadership position; ability to work in and to lead intercultural teams of highly qualified professionals; being curious and eager to take on responsibility
  • Skills: great interpersonal and communication skills / strengths in relationship management and change management; presentation skills, personal initiative, entrepreneurship, marketing strength; innovative and open mindset, creativity and ability to direct your and your team's energy towards a client focused approach and role model for the team.
  • Strong intercultural sensitivity
  • Languages: Fluent business English (essential)
