A furniture designer's job is to plan, create, and test furniture for industrial, commercial, and domestic clients. Their responsibilities include:
• Researching : Studying design trends, period styles, and new techniques
• Selecting materials : Choosing suitable materials like wood, metal, plastic, or textiles
• Designing : Creating designs and technical drawings using CAD software, sketches, or models
• Prototyping : Building or overseeing the development of prototypes
• Testing : Testing how well the model stands up to wear and tear
• Collaborating : Discussing designs with clients and manufacturers, and liaising with craftsmen and production department staff
• Evaluating : Considering issues like cost, safety, materials, and manufacturing methods
• Organizing : Organizing plans and schedules with respect to the availability of resources
• Attending : Attending workshops and seminars on furniture design and manufacturing
Furniture designers may work for a company that builds furniture or for a large design firm that is contracted by furniture manufacturers. They spend most of their time in an office working on ideas but also spend time meeting with clients.
