Fellowship programme for psychologists in Psycho-oncology (Last date of application 7th August 2024)
Tata Medical Center, Kolkata is a state of the art, philanthropic, comprehensive cancer centre which aims to provide
high standards of quality assured care. The various departments of the centre work closely in a multidisciplinary
manner, thereby ensuring standardized care to the patients. The Fellowship programs have been designed in a
manner, which would not only help enhance their knowledge, but also develop a holistic, compassionate approach
to combat cancer. Department of Integrated Palliative Care and Psycho-oncology of Tata Medical Centre looks after
the physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of adults and children suffering from cancer and
their family members. The care starts from the time of diagnosis and the department works in harmony with the
other departments of the institution.
Fellowship objectives:
1. To learn and pick up skills to look after the patients who have cancer.
2. To learn diagnosis and management of psychiatric co morbidities in a medically ill person.
3. To learn to evaluate cognitive effects of cancer and its treatment in children and adults.
4. To learn to work in and interface with multidisciplinary teams and from various other specialities as Surgical
Oncology, Paediatric Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and other specialities.
5. To learn communication skills to help in the care of the patients and family members.
6. To engage in research activities of the department that includes doing systematic reviews, independent
studies on special patient groups e.g. women with breast cancer and service development related research.
7. To learn to prepare patient information leaflets in Bengali and other local languages on psychological aspects
of cancer and its treatment.
Essential Qualifications:
Essential qualification includes M Phil degree in Clinical Psychology that is registrable with the Rehabilitation Council
of India as a clinical psychologist. Candidates who have appeared for their M Phil (Clinical Psychology) examinations
and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. Some experience/exposure in treating and dealing with patients with
cancer is desirable.
No of Fellowship Positions: Two every year
Fellowship Duration: One year.
Evaluation: Candidates will be evaluated regularly based on day to day clinical activities. There will be six monthly
written evaluations that will include MCQ examination/short note/essay type questions along with yearly viva/case
presentation examination. Candidates will have to maintain a logbook for the patients they have seen. They will be
expected to undertake a 360-degree feedback from service users, colleagues, supervisors and other people on a
yearly basis.
