To work closely with the Consultant Ophthalmologist to ensure professional standards are achieved and maintained at all times, for the provision of highest quality hospital optometry services.
To facilitate Ophthalmologists in doing the Initial assessment, in order to determine nature and degree of vision problem or eye disease and do refraction for corrective lenses or procedures: various tests to determine visual acuity and perception. This is verified and validated by Ophthalmologist before prescribing glasses and/or drugs.
Carry out detailed eye examinations, test patients eyes for sight defects and eye disease using a range of tests and sophisticated equipment.
Post refraction reading for eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids or therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision is documented in the EMR by Optometrists, prescription will be given by the Ophthalmologist. Optometrists shall not give a prescription.
Evaluate the physical appearance and status of lids, tears, cornea, and ocular surface; measure corneal topography by keratometric, corneoscopic and slit lamp examination.
Teaching patients eye exercises, advising on how to organize the workplace setup so that eyestrain is minimized.
To undertake a wide range of sub-specialty clinical services involving advanced optometric extended roles. This includes Post Operative Cataract assessment/management, satellite post-operative clinics, school screening, Camp screening and low vision clinics. An extensive personal clinical commitment to these services is required.
Carrying out extended clinical techniques. This includes Corneal Topography. Pachymetry, corneal/lid foreign body removal.
Extended role clinical activities require highly developed skills involving both precision and speed, where significant levels of hand eye and sensory co-ordination are essential. This often involves working in certain restricted positions/ posture that cannot easily be changed.
To work with the Consultant Ophthalmologist to ensure best practice, and the provision of highest quality hospital optometry service.
To be able to assist and supply accurate information to the Medical Superintendent with regards to complex departmental complaints/issues.
Delegated responsibility by the Medical Superintendent for the management, supervision and administration of certain activities within the Department and its personnel and low vision stock monitoring.
To contribute to operational planning for the Department. This may involve dealing with some complex, sensitive and contentious information. The post holder will be expected to provide advice, instruction or training to groups where the subject matter is generally straightforward.
Contact lens Clinic Management
Manage operations and scheduling in the contact lens clinic
May specialize in type of services provided, such as contact lenses, low vision aids or vision therapy, or in treatment of specific groups, such as children or elderly patients.
Interpret prescription and verify lens parameter; determine the patient's most appropriate lens type, style and parameter.
To facilitate Ophthalmologists in dispensing lenses; inspect and verify parameters of lenses received using biomicroscope, radiuscope, diameter gauge, thickness calipers, vertometer and wet cell.
Evaluate contact lens fit for vision, movement, fluorescein pattern, and lens-cornea relationship using biomicroscope, fluorescein, diagnostic lenses, and refractometry; evaluate patient history and ocular complaints relative to contact lens wear; document any positive find by diagram or photograph; refer suspected medical problems to a physician.
Final glass prescription will be prescribed by the consultant In-Charge .
