We work across disciplines to transform improved hardware and software elements into a single, integrated design. Join us, and you will help us innovate new battery technologies that continually outperform the previous iterations.We are seeking a motivated Control Engineer to join our Battery Engineering Team. In this role, you will apply your skills to developing world-class green Energy Storage Solutions (ESS) that lead the industry in quality and performance, drive customer results, and make a difference in people's lives. Do you have a passion for invention and self-challenge ?The ideal candidate should be seeking a challenging technical career growth opportunity and will appreciate mentorship from accomplished experts in the field of batteries and power electronics.The RoleESS Control Engineer is responsible to define, simulate and parameterize all the controllers of the Battery System including BMS. He/She works with System engineer, Software engineers and Network/Communication engineers for the design, development, and launch of Battery System software, control and network functionalities in both traction and auxiliary Lithium-Ion battery systems.He/she participates in complete development cycle of the Battery Management, Safety & Control elements assuring the design and test of control functionalities. Collaborating with software, network/communication and validation engineers, he/she is responsible to realize integration activities and simulation for algorithms, applicative software and hardware based on Functional Requirements Specifications (FRS).Main ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include : -

  • Work with requirements team to develop functional design and implementation of battery control features.
  • Work with traction converter/ charger and battery engineers, firmware engineers, tender team, and customers to elicit requirements and broader directions.
  • Translate product requirements into functional requirements and detailed plans for control system development.
  • Support writing of Functional Requirement Specification and write Battery Control Requirements.
  • Design and implement digital controls for energy storage system elements, battery management systems, and associated functions.
  • Contribute to developing a robust and reusable control system algorithm library/ platform for energy storage solutions.
  • Develop cell & battery models using first-principles physics-based and/or data-driven empirical methodologies.
  • Develop advanced models and algorithms for battery life simulations and for the use of advanced close-loop state estimation algorithms.
  • Support the development of a variety of battery control strategies and methods that ensure optimal and safe battery operation. This includes battery modeling, state estimation, calibration, and validation at all levels.
  • Work with cell engineers & suppliers to develop electrochemical characterization and cell test plans for model parametrization and validation.
  • Implement developed models in Matlab/Simulink for BMS algorithms MIL/ HIL validations.
  • Responsible for configuration management and implementation of safety-critical applications.
  • Participate in design reviews according to the Design For Quality (DFQ) process. Respect the Quality, Cost, Delivery (QCD) criteria and update the KPIs of control activity. Organize and realize the follow-up of activities placed under your responsibility (budget and workloads).
  • Demonstrate ownership of your project workflow management through design, validation, field, & production release phases of control system development.
  • Develop test solutions for controls validation; develop and specify test fixtures; and contribute to continuous improvement of automated test systems for end of line testing and in-field use.
  • Provide support for released control systems; drive root cause and develop solutions to discovered field issues within the issue tracking system. Configure existing BMS to meet needs for specific customer applications.
  • Support validation activities on test bench, during commissioning and field trials.
  • Support DFMEAs for controls and battery systems. Investigate technical facts and perform RCA (Root Cause Analysis) for failures/issues observed during production, field trials, warranty and reliability growth phase of the product. Propose technical solutions and manage problem solving.
  • Driving improvement with new algorithm development to enhance products performance and capabilities for estimation of Capacity, Energy, Power etc.
  • Contribute to battery control system roadmaps & innovation projects; work with engineering teams to assess needs & ideas, add capabilities, and adapt products for new applications.
  • Ensure capitalization of feedback on reference solutions or document repositories of the business.

  • Experience in physics-based modeling of electrochemical, thermal, fluid, or chemical transport systems. Strong fundamental knowledge on lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrochemical and thermal processes, and aging mechanisms.
  • Mathematic skills in numerical methods of solving PDEs and ODEs, numerical optimization, and control theories. Familiarity with analog and digital circuitry; the ability to model and account for circuitry in control system design
  • Mathematical modelling of cells, battery components and fine-tuning of controllers, in Li-ion Battery System.
  • Well versed in software and controls development, battery algorithms, functional safety, and CAN/ TRDP/ MVB network as well as development tools.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in real time/ embedded control algorithms and software development for Li-ion battery systems preferred.
  • Good knowledge of simulation tools (Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow, PLECS, PSIM etc.) and networking protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, MVB and TRDP. Experience with CAN and CAN development tools.
  • Knowledge of embedded software architecture for the battery management system (BMS). Experience in development of mission and safety-critical algorithms like prediction of SOC and SOH, charge control, thermal control, fault detection, testing, debugging and diagnostics of firmware.
  • Knowledge of configuration management principles, requirement traceability principles, configuration and change management tools. Basic knowledge of industrial development cycles (V-cycle, quality reviews, ...).
  • Excellent problem analysing, problem solving, logical thinking and technical troubleshooting skills. Understanding of the needs of customers, problem synthesis, responsiveness, autonomy and teamwork.
  • Ability to present data/solutions in a clear manner, easy for non-experts to understand.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) and good communication skills.
