Job Description

An electrician's job description includes:

• Installation : Install electrical systems, wiring, and fixtures in buildings
• Maintenance : Maintain electrical systems and equipment
• Repair : Repair electrical systems and equipment using hand and power tools
• Troubleshooting : Identify electrical problems and troubleshoot them
• Safety : Ensure electrical systems meet national electrical safety standards and regulations
• Documentation : Complete work orders and record materials used
• Training : Train workers on how to install, maintain, or repair electrical systems
• Customer service : Address customer questions and concerns, and make emergency repair calls

Electricians need to have a variety of skills, including:

• Physical stamina : They may need to move around all day, sometimes at great heights or in cramped spaces
• Physical strength : They may need to lift and move electrical components that weigh up to 50 pounds or more
• Color vision : Electrical wiring is often color-coded, so electricians need to be able to see and discern colors
• Troubleshooting skills : They need to be able to find, diagnose, and repair problems
• Critical-thinking skills : They need to be able to use tests and results to diagnose problems and determine the best course of action
• Customer service skills : They need to be comfortable working with customers
