  • At least 3 years teaching experience with young language learners
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or Linguistics.
  • Teaching Qualification
  • CELTA or equivalent
  • Valued additional assets:
  • Knowledge of reading development (i.e. use of reading programs, phonics, enjoyment of literature)
  • Knowledge of the MYP Language Acquisition Program
  • International Baccalaureate Experience and IB training for Inclusive practices.
  • Previous MYP/DP teaching experience
  • Knowledge of WIDA or similar system to facilitate a placement and tracking system.

The positionThe Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and is the second in the network of Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan.The Academy features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body, and an experienced team of educators and staff. The EAL teacher's role is to ensure that each child in the school with EAL needs makes the maximum possible progress, feels safe and enjoys their time at school. They aim to empower students whose English language repertoire lies significantly below that of the grade average. The EAL teacher will liaise with the Head of EAL in setting up and implementing baseline tests, monitoring and tracking the progress of students as well as providing activities to engage, extend and inspire the students. They will collaborate with parents, teachers and staff to ensure the child's EAL needs are being met. They will support faculty with advice about scaffolding learning and support with lessons as well as guidance on the student's specific language needs.Primary accountabilities:Assessment, placement and monitoring
  • Review previous year assessments of returning students.
  • Plan and carry out beginning of year assessments for new students.
  • Consult with teachers regarding most effective placement.
  • Manage the pull-out/aside classes and/or push in support.
  • Monitor, track and review placement for efficacy.
  • Make end-of-year recommendations for next year's placements.
Curriculum
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons and assessments.
  • Support students in content-area classes by scaffolding vocabulary and reviewing and revising assignments.
  • Integrate language objectives into lessons.
Communication
  • Attend weekly staff meetings as well as other subject and team meetings
  • Work closely with the EAL and SEN teams.
  • Facilitate training and support teachers as required.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with parents, faculty, and residences regarding the progress of each student.
Additional duties:
  • As a member of the teaching faculty, support and mentor students to achieve their targeted goals at the school. Participate in school wide expectations.
