The duty doctor is responsible for delivering medical care to patients in the absence of the regular attending physicians. This role includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients, managing emergencies, and ensuring continuity of care during off-hours. The duty doctor will work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and emergency rooms.
Key Responsibilities
• Patient Assessment and Diagnosis
• Conduct thorough examinations of patients presenting with a wide range of symptoms and complaints.
• Take patient histories and perform physical exams to gather essential information for diagnosis.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as blood work, imaging studies, and other laboratory tests.
• Treatment and Management
• Develop and implement treatment plans for patients based on diagnoses.
• Prescribe medications, therapies, and other interventions as necessary.
• Provide emergency care, including resuscitation, stabilization, and minor surgical procedures when required.
• Coordination of Care
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, specialists, and administrative staff, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
• Refer patients to specialists or other healthcare facilities for further treatment when necessary.
• Communicate effectively with patients and their families about diagnoses, treatment options, and prognosis.
• Emergency Response
• Respond promptly to medical emergencies and acute situations within the healthcare facility.
• Manage critical care situations and make decisions under pressure.
• Perform life-saving procedures, such as intubation, defibrillation, and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
• Documentation and Record Keeping
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all patients treated during the shift.
• Ensure proper documentation of patient interactions, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes.
• Write clear and concise handover notes for the incoming medical team.
• Compliance and Ethics
• Adhere to all relevant medical, ethical, and legal standards and guidelines.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
• Stay updated with the latest medical research and best practices in emergency and general medicine.
Qualifications
• Medical degree (MBBS, MD, DO, or equivalent).
• Valid medical license to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.
• Completion of a residency program in a relevant specialty (e.g., emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine).
• Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Excellent clinical skills and the ability to make quick decisions in emergency situations.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
