Kitchen Steward/Dishwasher - Role and Responsibilities
Overview: A Kitchen Steward, also known as a Dishwasher, plays a vital role in maintaining cleanliness and organization within a restaurant's kitchen. They are responsible for cleaning dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment, as well as supporting overall kitchen operations to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow.
Key Responsibilities:
• Cleaning and Sanitizing:
• Wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils using dishwashing machines or by hand.
• Ensure all kitchen equipment, such as mixers, slicers, and grills, are cleaned and sanitized regularly.
• Maintain cleanliness of floors, counters, and kitchen areas, ensuring adherence to health and safety standards.
• Waste Management:
• Dispose of kitchen waste and recyclables properly, ensuring bins are emptied and cleaned regularly.
• Follow proper waste separation and recycling procedures to minimize environmental impact.
• Support Kitchen Operations:
• Assist chefs and kitchen staff with basic food preparation tasks, such as peeling vegetables and preparing ingredients.
• Restock kitchen supplies, including clean dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment.
• Ensure that all kitchen areas are well-organized and free of hazards.
• Inventory and Supplies:
• Monitor and report low inventory levels of dishwashing supplies, cleaning agents, and kitchen necessities.
• Assist in receiving and storing deliveries, ensuring proper rotation and storage of ingredients and supplies.
• Maintenance:
• Perform routine maintenance tasks on dishwashing machines and kitchen equipment.
• Report any malfunctioning equipment or maintenance issues to the supervisor promptly.
• Team Collaboration:
• Work closely with kitchen staff and servers to ensure efficient service and support during busy periods.
• Communicate effectively with team members to prioritize tasks and maintain a cohesive work environment.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Experience: Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment is preferred but not required.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy items, and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Attention to Detail: Keen eye for cleanliness and organization to maintain high standards of hygiene.
• Time Management: Efficient at managing time and prioritizing tasks to keep up with the demands of a busy kitchen.
