About the roleFinding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.The External Affairs (EA) team has accountability for engaging external stakeholders to positively shape Rio Tinto's policy and regulatory environment, enhance our competitive position and build trusted partnerships in our priority markets around the world.With teams and country offices globally, the EA function has responsibility for delivering commercially-focused advocacy with stakeholders including governments, regulators, think tanks, civil society and industry associations.EA seeks to embody our company values of Care, Courage and Curiosity. Help create a favorable operating environment for Rio Tinto by positively shaping our advocacy with governments, regulators, and policy-influencers.
Provide subject matter expertise, global insight, and intelligence to inform and guide our business strategy and decision-making, including exploration and business development activity.
Help to position Rio Tinto to build trusted partnerships with Governments, Civil Society Organizations, industry bodies and peer companies, to help secure and consolidate our license to operate and enhance our competitive position as a responsible and reputable global business with impeccable ESG credentials.
Overall accountability for EA activity in India and South-East Asia.
Responsibility for the development and implementation of an advocacy strategy in support of Rio Tinto's overall India country strategy, as well as all advocacy and EA engagement activity in SE Asia jurisdictions.
Serving as an EA strategic advisor for India and the wider South-East Asia region, providing strategic government relations and public policy advice and analysis to the business including to the Global Head of External Affairs, relevant Product Group leaders, Exploration and Business Development Teams and in-country India teams.
Leading the development of advocacy positions on key issues for our business in India and SE Asia, in support of commercial priorities, growth and exploration opportunities and Rio Tinto's business services operations based in Gurugram, Haryana.
Monitoring for, and advising on, key strategic political developments and risks in India and South-East Asia affecting RT operations, exploration and business development activities.
Providing EA support and advice in relation to exploration and new country entry processes across the SE Asia region.
Developing relationships with senior government stakeholders in India and our priority SE Asia jurisdictions.
Drafting position papers, briefing documents and executive speaking points as necessary.
Conducting stakeholder mapping exercises when required, to include key government, CSO and industry peers across the region.
Line management of an EA Advisor for India.
About YourselfWe are looking for passionate candidates having:
Excellent knowledge of the government and political landscape in India, as well as knowledge of other key governments in the region\xe2\x88\x92 Laos and Vietnam in particular.
Minimum 10-15 years of experience in government, public policy or the private sector in a related field and with focus in/on India and the South-East Asia region. Private sector experience highly desirable.
Proven experience of developing and implementing advocacy strategies, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with key political and policy stakeholders.
Understanding of technical, commercial and financial principles, and how to translate business priorities into coherent advocacy positions.
Demonstrable leadership and people management skills.
Ability to operate well in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams and matrix business structure.
Initiative to pursue goals and objectives with minimal supervision.
Ability to manage budgets effectively.
Bachelor's degree in a business, economic, political science field is mandatory, with a Masters in International Affairs, or a related subject, desirable.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with fluency in English and at least one other language spoken in India.
