Job Summary:
The Geriatric Dialysis Technician is responsible for providing dialysis treatment to elderly patients with kidney failure or impaired kidney function in a geriatric hospital setting. This role involves operating dialysis equipment, monitoring patients during treatment, and ensuring their comfort and well-being throughout the dialysis process. The technician works closely with healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive care to elderly patients with complex medical needs.
Responsibilities:
Prepare and set up dialysis machines and equipment for elderly patients according to established protocols and patient-specific requirements.
Assess and monitor geriatric patients before, during, and after dialysis treatment, including vital signs, fluid balance, and overall condition.
Assist elderly patients in positioning comfortably during dialysis sessions, considering their mobility limitations and potential cognitive impairments.
Administer medications or intravenous fluids as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring proper dosages and patient safety.
Monitor dialysis equipment and troubleshoot any technical issues or alarms that may occur during treatment, taking prompt action to resolve problems.
Maintain a clean and sterile environment in the dialysis unit, including disinfection of equipment and adherence to infection control protocols.
Document patient information, treatment details, and any observations accurately and comprehensively in medical records.
Collaborate with healthcare team members, including physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation therapists, to coordinate care and address the unique needs of geriatric patients.
Provide emotional support and reassurance to elderly patients undergoing dialysis treatment, as well as their families or caregivers.
Educate geriatric patients and their families about kidney disease management, dietary restrictions, medication adherence, and self-care techniques.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a dialysis technician training program or certification preferred.
Previous experience in healthcare, particularly with geriatric patients, is advantageous.
Knowledge of dialysis procedures, equipment operation, and safety protocols, with a focus on addressing the specific needs and challenges of elderly individuals.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact sensitively and effectively with geriatric patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
Compassion, patience, and empathy for elderly patients experiencing chronic illnesses and age-related conditions.
Ability to adapt to changing patient needs and prioritize tasks in a dynamic healthcare environment.
Certification as a Dialysis Technician (e.g., Certified Haemodialysis Technician - CHT) may be required or preferred by some employers.
