The CSSD Technologist is responsible for overseeing the decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and distribution of surgical and medical instruments used across various departments in a healthcare facility. They ensure that all equipment is sterilized and safe for patient use, adhering to infection control standards and guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
• Instrument Decontamination and Sterilization:
• Receive and sort used surgical instruments and other medical devices.
• Operate sterilization equipment (autoclaves, chemical sterilizers, etc.) to ensure proper sterilization.
• Disassemble, clean, and inspect instruments for functionality and defects.
• Maintenance of Sterilization Equipment:
• Monitor and maintain the performance of autoclaves, washers, and other sterilization equipment.
• Perform routine checks and ensure that equipment is in proper working order.
• Preparation of Surgical Sets:
• Assemble and prepare surgical instrument sets for different surgical procedures.
• Ensure that instruments are complete, functional, and sterilized before use.
• Inventory Management:
• Monitor stock levels of surgical instruments, supplies, and sterilization materials.
• Coordinate with suppliers and departments to ensure the availability of necessary items.
• Adherence to Infection Control Standards:
• Follow strict hygiene and sterilization protocols in line with hospital policies and national/international standards.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA or other relevant infection control regulations.
• Quality Control:
• Monitor sterilization processes to ensure that instruments are sterilized effectively.
• Document sterilization processes and outcomes for traceability and quality assurance.
• Training and Education:
• Train new CSSD staff on sterilization techniques, equipment usage, and infection control practices.
• Participate in workshops and training to stay updated on new sterilization techniques and standards.
• Coordination with Other Departments:
• Collaborate with surgical, operating room, and other clinical teams to ensure timely delivery of instruments and sterile supplies.
• Respond to requests for instrument sets and other sterilized supplies as needed.
Skills and QualificationsTechnical Skills
• Knowledge of sterilization methods (steam, chemical, gas, dry heat).
• Proficiency in operating sterilization machinery and related CSSD equipment.
• Familiarity with medical instruments and their proper handling, assembly, and maintenance.
Attention to Detail
• Ability to identify defects in instruments and ensure instruments meet surgical standards.
Problem-Solving Skills
• Quick-thinking and adaptability in addressing challenges related to equipment failure or supply shortages.
