Job Summary:
The Plant Supervisor is responsible for managing and overseeing the daily operations of plant equipment and machinery on a civil construction site. This includes ensuring the efficient functioning, safety, and maintenance of all plant assets, such as concrete batching plants, asphalt plants, crushing plants, and other construction-related machinery. The Plant Supervisor works closely with operators, technicians, and site management to ensure that all materials are produced and supplied in line with project requirements and that operations run smoothly while maintaining safety and compliance with regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Plant Operations :
- Manage the daily operations of all plant machinery, ensuring optimal efficiency and minimal downtime.
- Oversee the production of construction materials (concrete, asphalt, aggregates, etc.) according to project demands.
- Monitor plant performance and adjust production schedules as required to meet project deadlines.
- Ensure all plant activities are in line with production targets and project schedules.
2. Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting :
- Schedule routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs to prevent equipment breakdowns and production delays.
- Conduct daily checks of plant equipment to identify potential problems.
- Coordinate with mechanics and the maintenance team to resolve machinery issues promptly.
- Maintain records of equipment servicing, breakdowns, and repairs.
3. Safety & Compliance :
- Ensure all plant operations comply with safety and environmental regulations.
- Conduct safety briefings and enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure proper handling and storage of raw materials in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Monitor the plant's environmental impact and ensure adherence to local environmental laws.
4. Staff Supervision & Training :
- Supervise plant operators, technicians, and other personnel to ensure proper operation of machinery.
- Train and mentor staff on the safe operation of plant equipment and best practices for efficient production.
- Evaluate staff performance and provide feedback or corrective actions when necessary.
- Ensure plant employees are certified and trained to operate machinery safely and effectively.
5. Quality Control :
- Ensure that the materials produced meet project specifications and quality standards.
- Work closely with the quality control team to test and verify material quality.
- Implement procedures to prevent defects or deviations from standards.
6. Inventory & Resource Management :
- Monitor inventory levels of raw materials, spare parts, and fuel to ensure continuous plant operations.
- Coordinate with procurement teams to replenish materials and parts as needed.
- Track fuel consumption and recommend ways to reduce energy costs.
7. Coordination & Communication :
- Liaise with site management and project teams to understand material needs and production requirements.
- Coordinate with suppliers and logistics teams to ensure timely delivery of raw materials and parts.
- Maintain accurate logs of plant activity, production outputs, and equipment usage.
8. Reporting & Documentation :
- Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports on plant operations, including productivity, maintenance, and safety records.
- Maintain thorough documentation of plant activities, such as machine runtime, breakdowns, and repair histories.
9. Budgeting & Cost Control :
- Monitor plant operating costs, including maintenance, repairs, and fuel consumption.
- Assist in the preparation and management of the plant's operating budget.
- Recommend cost-saving measures, such as optimizing plant processes or reducing energy consumption.
Qualifications:
- Education :
- High school diploma or equivalent. A degree or certification in mechanical engineering, plant operations, or a related field is an advantage.
- Experience :
- 5+ years of experience in plant operations, including maintenance and management roles in the construction or heavy equipment industries.
- Previous experience in supervising plant operators and maintenance staff on construction projects is preferred.
- Skills :
- Strong technical knowledge of plant equipment, including concrete batching plants, asphalt plants, crushing plants, and other heavy machinery.
- Ability to manage teams and provide leadership in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in using plant management software and basic computer applications.
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations related to plant operations.
Working Conditions :
- Work primarily outdoors on the construction site, exposed to various weather conditions and site hazards.
- May be required to work extended hours, including weekends, to meet project timelines.
- Must be comfortable working in a physically demanding environment.
