Computer Operator Duties and Responsibilities

Computer Operators oversee the operation of computer hardware systems, ensuring that these systems are used as efficiently and securely as possible.

They work with peripheral equipment and software to maintain functionality and may also perform some system repairs.

Their daily duties and responsibilities often include:

Monitor and control electronic computer and peripheral electronic data processing equipment Enter commands at a computer terminal and set controls on computer and peripheral devices Load peripheral equipment such as printers with selected materials for operating runs, or oversee loading of peripheral equipment by peripheral equipment operators Answer telephone calls to assist computer users encountering problems Confer with programmers, analysts, engineers and others to obtain information on project limitations, capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces Monitor system performance to ensure proper and efficient functioning Respond to program error messages by finding and correcting problems, or terminating the program Recover data in case of hardware or software failure Record information such as computer operating time, problems that occurred and actions taken Perform regular maintenance and troubleshooting on system Update and maintain computer inventories and equipment usage logs Ensure proper storage of all data and back-up systems
