A commis chef, or Commi 1, is a novice chef who works in a commercial kitchen to support the chef de partie. Their responsibilities may include:
• Cooking Assisting the chef in preparing, cooking, and presenting dishes
• Cleaning Maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the kitchen, including equipment, utensils, and work areas
• Safety and sanitationEnsuring food is stored properly to prevent spoilage, and following food health and safety regulations
• OrganizationUnpacking and organizing deliveries, and ensuring duties are completed in a timely manner
• CommunicationReporting issues to superiors, such as malfunctioning equipment or defects in the kitchen
• OtherMaintaining proper pars, ensuring food displays are attractive, and supporting the accident prevention program
