Responsibilities:
• Monitoring patients: Cardiac nurses closely monitor patients with heart conditions, tracking vital signs, heart rhythms, and symptoms.
• Assisting with procedures: They assist in diagnostic tests like echocardiograms, stress tests, and cardiac catheterizations.
• Administering medication: They manage and administer medications related to cardiovascular health, including blood thinners, antihypertensives, and medications for heart failure.
• Post-operative care: After surgeries like coronary artery bypass grafts or heart transplants, cardiac nurses care for patients during recovery.
• Patient education: They teach patients about lifestyle changes, medications, and rehabilitation after heart surgery or a cardiac event.
• Emergency care: Cardiac nurses are trained to respond to cardiac emergencies, such as heart attacks or arrhythmias, by performing CPR or using defibrillators.
Specializations:
• Cardiothoracic surgery nurses: Assist in the care of patients undergoing surgeries involving the heart or chest.
