Key Responsibilities :
1. Preparation and Serving of Beverages :
• Prepare high-quality coffee beverages, such as espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, and other specialty coffee drinks, according to cafe standards.
• Brew coffee, tea, and other beverages and serve them to customers.
• Ensure consistency in taste, quality, and presentation of all beverages.
• Operate espresso machines, grinders, blenders, and other equipment safely and efficiently.
2. Customer Service :
• Greet customers warmly and take their orders in a friendly and professional manner.
• Answer customer questions about menu items, ingredients, and beverage recommendations.
• Make suggestions and offer upsell opportunities for desserts, snacks, and other cafe items.
• Ensure that each customer's experience is pleasant and that their needs are met in a timely and courteous manner.
• Handle customer complaints or concerns and resolve them in a calm and positive manner.
3. Cash Handling and Order Taking :
• Take accurate orders from customers, ensuring that they are entered correctly into the system.
• Handle cash and process credit/debit card transactions.
• Provide change and issue receipts as required.
• Maintain accurate records of orders and sales.
4. Maintaining Cleanliness :
• Clean and sanitize workstations, counters, tables, and equipment regularly throughout the shift.
• Ensure that the cafe is tidy and organized, with clean floors, surfaces, and seating areas.
• Empty trash and keep all public and work areas free of debris and spills.
• Regularly check and clean coffee machines, grinders, and brewing equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
5. Stock Management :
• Ensure that all ingredients, such as coffee beans, milk, syrups, and other supplies, are stocked and readily available.
• Replenish stock of cups, napkins, straws, and other service items.
• Monitor inventory levels and report low stock to the supervisor or manager for reordering.
6. Food Service (if applicable) :
• Prepare and serve light food items, such as pastries, sandwiches, and snacks, in a clean and safe manner.
• Ensure food is served in a timely manner, following cafe procedures.
• Handle food orders and deliver them to the correct table or customer.
• Ensure food safety and hygiene standards are met when preparing, storing, and handling food.
7. Health and Safety Compliance :
• Follow all health, safety, and sanitation guidelines as per cafe standards and regulations.
• Ensure proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment to maintain hygiene.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment to prevent accidents or injuries.
• Adhere to the cafe's policies regarding the safe handling of food and beverages.
8. Teamwork and Communication :
• Work collaboratively with other cafe staff, including chefs, servers, and cleaning staff, to ensure smooth operations.
• Communicate effectively with coworkers, management, and customers.
• Assist with setting up and closing the cafe, ensuring that all tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
9. Other Responsibilities :
• Assist in the preparation of seasonal or special menu items and promotions.
• Participate in training sessions or workshops to improve barista skills and knowledge of coffee preparation.
• Ensure that any customer requests, such as dietary preferences or special drink requests, are handled accurately.
Skills & Qualifications :
Education :
• High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• Barista training or certification is an advantage but not mandatory.
Experience :
• Previous experience as a barista, cafe assistant, or in a customer service role is preferred but not always required.
• Experience with coffee machines, espresso equipment, and customer service is beneficial.
Skills :
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with customers.
• Good knowledge of different types of coffee beans, brewing methods, and beverage recipes.
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently under pressure.
• Strong attention to detail and focus on delivering high-quality drinks and service.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
Physical Requirements :
• Ability to stand for long periods and work in a busy environment.
• Capable of lifting boxes or supplies (up to 25-30 lbs).
• Manual dexterity to handle coffee machines, grinders, and other tools.
Work Environment :
• The role is primarily performed in a cafe or coffee shop setting.
• It involves working in a fast-paced environment with high customer interaction.
• The barista may be exposed to hot surfaces, steam, and loud noises from coffee machines.
• There may be some exposure to cleaning chemicals and food allergens.
Working Hours :
• Shifts may vary, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays, depending on the cafe's operating hours.
• Full-time and part-time positions may be available.
