Purpose:
The purpose of the MSL Lead / Manager role is to effectively implement the Field Medical plan and initiatives developed as a part of overall disease area plan during the pre, peri & post launch of any new Lilly asset. The MSL Lead / Manager will be accountable for the overall performance through effective development of assigned Medical Scientific Liaison(s), and by providing strategic direction for the team of MSLs in close collaboration with Clinical Research Physician and Medical Affairs Professional of the respective therapy area. The MSL Lead / Manager will be ultimately responsible for ensuring the field medical plans & initiatives has a positive impact on Lilly by building relationships with internal and external partners.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Implementation of Field Medical Strategies
The MSL Lead / Manager will focus on field medical strategy development in alignment with Clinical Research Physician of the Therapy Area, execution of medical communication plan by the MSLs, including medical omni channel engagements and ensure field implementation is in alignment with Business Unit, Indian Affiliate priorities via review of all assigned Scientific / Medical Experts included in their geographies of operations and will evaluate internal/external feedback regarding team performance.
2. Achieve Operational Effectiveness
The MSL Lead / Manager is accountable for overall performance and compliance of the Medical Liaison Team and ensuring alignment with applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines; Global Medical Policies and Procedures.. Responsibilities include working with CRPs & MAPs, IBU Medical Liaison Operations to ensure that appropriate ML training is available, identifying process improvement initiatives, and ensuring appropriate documentation practices are employed. The MSL Lead / Manager will also be responsible for partnering with relevant stakeholder on the design, analysis and communication of voice of the customer results and will encourage sharing of best practices with appropriate reward and recognition programs. Finally, the MSL Lead / Manager will be responsible for providing appropriate leadership in the current competitive and regulatory environment.
3. Effective Development of People
The MSL Lead / Manager will have direct supervisory responsibility for the Medical Scientific Liaisons. The MSL Lead / Manager will coach and develop talent to perform to their highest levels. At least Monthly interaction with all direct reports and with other cross functional stakeholders within and outside of medical function is required. Develop and strengthen skills of Medical Liaisons through joint field visits at regular intervals. In addition, attendance at medical meetings involving external clients will be expected to ensure overall effectiveness of the team.. The MSL Lead / Manager will oversee the recruitment strategy and staffing as well as assure the standards of disease area and product knowledge for MLs are maintained. Finally, the MSL Lead / Manager will actively participate in succession planning and talent development.
4. Interface with Business Partners
The MSL Lead / Manager is responsible for building and maintaining effective relationships with all appropriate internal business partners to communicate ML team objectives/deliverables (including Brand Team, Medical and Marketing Teams, Health Outcomes, Health Education, Senior Management, and other relevant field personnel). Relationships with external Scientific Experts will be improved by strong collaboration of the MSL Lead / Manager with appropriate Brand and Medical counterparts. Ongoing networking is also essential to discuss therapeutic area strategy and opportunities for strengthening key relationships with external Scientific Experts.
5. Establish and Maintain Effective EXTERNAL Business Partnerships .
• Scientific Experts:
Field visits with MLs and their SEs to build strong relationships with external scientific experts bringing the external knowledge into Lilly and partnering with a broad, diverse group of internal business partners to drive strategic decisions around compounds, specific therapeutic area and the IBU ML function.
o Compliance and Quality:
Create a culture where quality and compliance is expected and integrated into daily tasks and activities performed by individuals in the ML organization . Proactively monitor ML team compliance. Cooperate with investigations, monitoring and audits and drive implementation of the Medical Quality System.
6. Support Business Planning:
The MSL Lead / Manager is accountable for creating and managing the business plan data for field medical. This includes identifying the budget & full-time equivalent (FTE) resources needed to implement strategic plans, and communicating data of financial forecasts and personnel changes to financial management.

• Demonstrated learning agility for acquiring technical knowledge
• Demonstrated experience in motivating people and creating positive team environments
• Demonstrated ability to develop and apply creative solutions
• Demonstrated decision-making ability
• Experience in a successful operation within a field-based environment is highly valued
Other Information/Additional Preferences:
• Medical or science (BPharm/Biotechnology/Life Sciences) degree/background preferred
• Therapeutic area expertise is highly valued
• Experience in working within a regulated environment is desirable
